I know and agree. I want crumple zones. I want air bags. I want fuel efficiency. But my 1978 Mercury was a dinosaur from an earlier epoch. It was like a land-based aircraft carrier. It was one of those cars where, after a collision, you might hose the brains, bits of skull, and blood off the dashboard, and it's good to go for the next driver. It had an "economy" 6.6 liter engine. Right before I sold it, it was getting 7 miles to the gallon and probably about 20 miles to the gallon of power steering fluid.
Same thing happened when I was a kid. My family traded in our mid 1970s Ford LTD and came home with a Chevy Nova (Made under License by Toyota) It was basically just a Carolla with a bow tie on the grill.
OK, here's the car collection of ultimate power: Pinto, Gremlin, Pacer, Vega.
I'll politely add...Yugo, Lada, Yaris, Corolla's (excluding their 4x4 wagon 5-speed rockets), any pre-2005 Hyundai, Chevette (though they were easy to work on), Justy, and the Neon.
