This Spitfire was converted from a Mk I fighter into a Mk VIII photo reconnaissance aircraft by fitting three cameras and an extra fuel tank into the rear fuselage. Since it was specifically designed for low altitude reconnaissance on cloudy days and at dawn or dusk it retained its gun armament and was painted all over pink. This was found to be the best colour for hiding the aircraft against the clouds from AA gunners below. The clouds themselves hid the aircraft from above. From 1941 this Spitfire photographed Channel ports from its base in Devon.
