In WW2, was there any experimentation with or use of mid-air refuelling?

Hi qts,
Apart from rumours of Wing Walkers with 5 gallon cans of fuel strapped to there backs in the early 20's   I believe that the 1st documented inflight refueling took place in the summer of 1951 over North Korea between F-84's & KB-29 Tankers.

1st aerial refuelling I think was in 1929. The US army air corps conducted some refuelling experiments and flights. General (at the time Major)Carl Spaatz was one of the leaders in this effort.
