"Naughty Norma" was a B-24J of the 389th Bomb Group's 566th Bomb Squadron and was named after the wife of its pilot 1st Lt. John Forsyth. His crew flew most of their 50 mission tour in this aircraft from February until July 1944. At this point it was handed over to the crew of 2nd Lt. David Deeter. On only their second mission the inexperienced bombardier made the mistake of closing the bomb bay doors before hitting the switch to clear the bomb racks of any hung bombs. One such bomb dropped and ripped off a bomb bay door which then struck one of the engines. The crew all bailed safely from the stricken bomber and two were able to evade capture and return to Allied lines.
