This Ca-1 (Hungarian late production Me 210 with better engines) was assigned to the RHAF's 5/1 night fighter squadron in early 1944. It was painted in a variation of the standard RHAF scheme with the fuselage mottling extended onto the wing leading edges. Presumably this was to break up the aircraft's dark silhouette when viewed from the perspective of an enemy rear gunner at night. The owl emblem applied to the nose and red and white spiral spinners were both squadron ID markings. This aircraft Z0+66 suffered a landing gear failure and belly landed at Ferihegy in March 1944 but was later repaired and returned to service.
Although set up as a night fighter squadron 5/1 was never used in that role. Instead in April it was briefly thrown against the USAAF's 15th Air Force who had just began attacking Hungarian cities. While on occasion able to inflict some damage to the USAAF bombers this was more than offset by the losses inflicted by the enemy's P-38s and B-24s. So the RHAF quickly withdrew the Ca-1 from the "zestorer" role and repurposed it against the Soviets as a fast dive bomber and recon aircraft, something it did pretty well. So later in 1944 the remnants of 5/1 NFS became 102/3 dive bomber squadron.
