5” HVAR Rocket Payload vs. 500lb Bomb.
« on: November 01, 2023, 10:15:38 AM »
I have been trying to figure out how much punch a single rocket rocket carries compared to 500 pound bombs. Best guess I can come up with from searching the forums and my own experience is a single rocket is roughly 175-200 pounds of ordnance.

I hot sucked into a lengthy conversation about this with ChatGPT using actual WWII metrics and we ended up here. It came up with 5-10 rockets to equally one bomb. So that’s real life roughly anyway. If anyone knows the real AH answer I would be happy to hear it.

In Aces High, a 5" HVAR does 156lb of damage, a 500lb bomb does 562lb of damage.

I found an old damage chart.  A 500 lb bomb does 562 "pounds" of damage.  A 5" HVAR does 156 "pounds" of damage. So according to this chart, 3.6 HVAR's would be equal to a 500 lb bomb, assuming all the rockets hit the same spot.

In real life (and in game), the 5" HVAR was roughly equivalent to a 5" naval shell.  In fact, the first 5" HVAR's were literally made from 5" HE shells attached to rockets.

Thanks I was close then lol. Three per one 500 it is!

Now I need to see who will go dump a hanger with me using only rockets. Two P47s is all you need.

All of that multiplies if you are drinking frozen margaritas.
