Winter Firefly
« on: August 22, 2024, 02:51:49 AM »
For some reason the British Army did not encourage the practice of camouflaging their tanks with whitewash when it snowed but some units did it anyway. The tanks of the 1st Nottinghamshire Yeomanry, including this Firefly,  were whitewashed for Operation Blackcock. This was an offensive designed to drive the German XII SS Corps out of a triangle of land on the Dutch German border in January 1945. The regiment was attached to the 52nd Infantry Division and this unit took the heaviest casualties during the ultimately successful battle, with some 700 casualties.
