Bf 109G-2 flown by Walter Krupinski of 6./JG 52 in October 1942. Fighting in the Kuban region at the time, "Count" as he was nicknamed, had been transferred to 6 Staffel from 4 Staffel, it's sister squadron in II/JG 52, in early October. It is likely that this plane was his personal mount since it is clear that a previous side number was painted over at the time of it's photo being taken, and that change of squadron would necessitate a change from white markings to yellow. On October 9th, Krupinski scored his 50th air victory, a LAGG-3 over the Black Sea near the city of Tuapse. This plane was lost in a crash landing on October 25th.
In January 1943, Krupinski was appointed commander of 7./JG 52, where he became mentor to a fledgling pilot in the squadron named Erich Hartmann, who would eventually become the Ace of Aces. The Count would himself score over 100 victories while leading 7 Staffel.
In early 1944, Krupinski left the Eastern Front for posts with units fighting the Americans and British. He served with JG's 5, 11, and 26, scoring 21 victories over that span. He ended the war flying Me 262's in JV 44 under Adolf Galland.
