win98 not recognizing cd-rom drive

need a little help here
friend of mine has an athlon 1600xp running win 98, up until yesterday everything was fine. but now win 98 no longer sees the cd drive( bios still picks it up just fine)
nothing has changed in the system( hardware or software )
it's a generic 40X BTW.

Had this problem numerous times with Win98 when I would change around my harddrives.  Have him search for "noide.inf" on his Win98 CD.  Right click on the file and choose install.  Reboot and Win98 will probably pick up his CD drive.

it's not on his cd... i even looked through all the cab files but no luck

Just back up your registry (do a start->run->scanregw and respond yes to the

For anyone else who has this problem the fix suggested by Andrew worked
well and completely solved the problem. This one,s worth keeping !!

no luck...there was no entry with noide.

Do a quick test. You said BIOS picked it up right? Put the CD-ROM as the first boot device.


Pop the win98 CD into the CD-ROM and restart computer.

If you get a win98 menu as it starts up, then its something messed up in windows. If it just goes straight into loading windows, your CD-ROM is physically messed up. If its the 2nd, open case, unplug and replug all the cd-rom cables, restart and test again.

If it still doesnt work, your cd-rom is kapput. Perfect excuse to get a DVD

Never seen a Win98 CD without "noide.inf"  If you can't find it on the CD, do a search on the internet.  You will find it somewhere.

I'm gonna try my cd drive in his computer..
if that don't work...guess it's format/reinstall time.

hehe, I guess so.  The file size is 417 bytes so you can pop it on a disk and try it.
