I'm new, I'm rubbish.
« on: February 22, 2002, 01:13:27 PM »
Hi, I'm new to Aces High and I'm absolutely rubbish at it, so I was wondering if you lot could help me get better at it.

1. I can't take off that often, my plane veers off to the left of the runway and then if I do get in the air my plane makes a dodgy noise and crashes.

2. Can you get rid of black-outs and blood rushes and if so how? (only until I get good enough at it to put them back on).

3. Is their an easy flight mode I can put this on like I can on Dawn of Aces and Warbirds?

Any more tips on how I can make this game more beginner friendly would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

There are very few sims. Like AH.First thing is do you have a joystick?
2Nd.the blackouts are caused by pulling to hard on stick,And NO there is no easy mode to fly in,I would suggest flying the a6m or a spit to get use to the flight model in AH.Im sure there are more and BETTER detailed answers to your questions from others that play.
Good Luck

Welcome!

1.  Use rudder to counter torque, throttle up slowly and pull back gently.  Also, open clipboard, click settings, click flight and choose "auto-takeoff".  Don't touch the stick and up you go.

2.  Nope

3.  Nope, but there is CT or Combat Trim which roughly trims your plane during flight. (ctrl-x to activate it)

Enjoy!!

Firstly, thanks for the help you two.

Secondly, no I don't have a joystick, I'm using a gamepad.

Thirdly, Why is it that even in the boats and trucks it veers to the leftwhen you go forward, it's incredibly annoying and I'm not sure about the planes but boats and trucks don't always veer to the left when you turn the engine and up the throttle.

It sounds like your gamepad is not "centering" properly.

You really won't be able to fly effectively with a gamepad.  Give it a try using the mouse, you will have better luck.  To be effective and have some fun though, I think you'll find a cheap joystick necessary.

Agreed a gamepad is not really the way to go at all, But having said that if you find the GV's won't run true can I ask have you calibrated the gamepad within AH? (From clipboard select "setup" then "Joystick"). You should be able to calibrate the device and also adjust any "Deadzones" and add "Damping" to the controls from there and also adjust the sensitivity around the center point. Might help a bit, but in anycase "Go Get A Stick", Even a basic one as long as it has "Twist" for rudder will transform the AH experience. ;)

1) There is an option under the "set up" section of the clipboard, the "flight" button; where you can set auto take off. Despite the purists beating their chest - most people use it. It will at least get you up in the air. Use combat trim too - 90% of AH fliers do, and 10% lie about it.

2) You really will benefit from even the cheapest joystick.

3) Don't worry too much about the "dodgy sound" - it's the stall warning - and it's programmed to be deliberatly sensitive to give you plenty of warning that your approaching the edge of controlled flight. Think of it as the aeronautical equivalent of squeeling tyres. If you're in a close and dirty dogfight, you can expect to hear it just about all the time (just as you'd hear squeeling tyres racing around a car park); where as in a more open, higher speed fight in fast planes such as the Mustang or 190 D you shouldn't be hearing it as much (just as you wouldn't expect to squeel the tyres on the motorway).

4) Don't expect to fire up the engine and become the Red Baron - this game is hard! While you're finding your wings, stick to dive bombing missions- you'll have more sucesss; and once the bombs are gone then you can have a go at getting a kill.

5) The training arena is a nightmare - totaly unsupervised. You may find it more help to check out the head to head games, people are generally very helpfull.

6) Good luck and welcome.

Cheers Seeker, by the way, you said it might be a good idea to practice in head2head games but won't people get pissed off with a new person who's pretty awful compared to them?

The people in the H2H arenas are generally novices also..  Nobody minds a newbie playing with them, go out and have fun!

Hello burglecut

I wouldn't think so, unless they put it in the game name list like "Franks FFA (Free For All) please no NewBees or Teams only etc.

Anyway burglecut, the only one who may get pissed off is you, but you're more than welcome in most H2Hs.
I fly in "Jimboys" H2H and I'm better than before but I'm still a crappy player in terms of shooting people down.
I got no problem taking off or even landing.

Actually landing is the fun part since I get the crap shot out of me.  EVER try landing a plane with a million things wrong with it.  The key is not to let Jimboy see you because he'll finish you off if you're trying to return to base.  LOL

 In my humble opinion, don't buy a cheap joystick. Get one that is programmable, has an 8 way hat switch, and has a rudder built in. This should run you somewhere between 40 and 60 bucks. The microsoft sidewinder is a decent stick overall. Other sticks are good too...but micrososft's sticks are supported in all games. If you get a cheap stick, you will eventually end up buying a decent stick, then you will have a cheap stick gathering dust (or in my case,  controlling my kid's space ship) and your good stick. One other thing to make sure before you buy is what type of plug you can use, as in USB or the older sound card port. Good luck!
