I have a question.
« on: March 08, 2002, 12:57:02 PM »
I have a 633 Celeron with a Nvidea Vanta 16mb vid card (PCI). What would increase my gaming performance more, a 1.2 celeron upgrade, or a new 64mb PCI video card? Just curious.

Probably a video card, but how much RAM the video card has is not nearly as important as what video chipset it is.

What sort of monitor do you have and what resolution do you want to run?

I could not help notice he is asking about a PCI card.

If it were me, I would consider starting with a new motherboard.  PCI cards are getting harder and harder to find.  Investing in a PCI card today is probably not a good choice, when you could invest in a new motherboard for about the same money,...well,..maybe a little more money and then you open yourself to a whole new set of selections in the AGP realm.

You do not have to be rich to build a new system, just patient.

thanks guys. i would be happy running @ 1024x768 or whatever it is. PC Mall has tons of PCI video cards for sale for less than 100.00. If i took this thing apart to replace motherboard, i would never get it back together! :D

N1kpaz the display cards you can find from PC mall for less than $100 will hardly improve your performance too much.

It's no big deal to replace the motherboard as the motherboards come with a detailed manual which will specifically tell you what you need to insert and where.

However if you are budget limited, try to find a PCI geforce model, any of those will be an improvement over your vanta. Videomem doesn't affect performance because the cards that are fast enough come with plenty of ram, not necessarily vice versa. That means you can find a TNT with 64mb ram and it will still be the dog your vanta is now.

I have to ask if thats the fastest CPU your board will handle?

A celeron 1ghz cpu is cheap, you wouldn't see a large performance increase BUT!!  for 65$ on top of the CPU you could purchase a GF2 MX, which combined with the CPU would give you a nice performance boost.
