I haven't seen people in lately
« on: April 05, 2002, 07:44:55 AM »
I think it's been 3 weeks since I've seen more than 10 people in the CT (remembering when I could get on and see 40).  Am I signing on at the wrong times?  When do most people fly?

My frame rate is just gawd-awful in there; love the terrain though
(I'm running a Celeron-266 with 64MB RAM so I like to keep it above 10k)

preon1 i think you must have missed the BOB setup last week?

it was busy in there but i guess only at US times.Euro time it had a fair few.

this week its the excellent looking russian terrain but theres a few problems that seem to have caused a bit of poor attendance.

The map causes a bit of a hit with FPS and so im guessing those with lower end systems are struggleing to play on it.Theres also a bug at the moment which it particularly annoying to some and its a 'missing shape' bug.It repeats many times and effectively spoils the radio as what is typed is quickly lost off the screen.

personally i really like the map but i think a little bit of extra debugging is needed before it should be used.
I know its not my place to criticise the map either and im honestly trying not to but i feel it needs a few more bases here and there to reduce the seemingly long 'flights to fights'.
Another suggestion id make is make GVs available at the depots.
This may well negate the need for more bases as it seems the depots are in good mid-ground positions and so could make good focal points for a few land battles.

All in all the map does succeed immensly in one area, and its an area im sure is difficult to reproduce, and that is the Russian feel :). Its superbly made in this respect.Almost feel like im on the set of 'enemy at the gates' :D

With a bit of debugging and the later (hopefully)the introduction of the T34 and other russian and LW vehicles and planes this map i think will become one of the best.(ju87,t34,su2,he111,he177,hs129,tigerI,Panther,Pe 8,etc any of these would really help this map become top notch)

Preon1 also soon we get nuttz's tunisia terrain. And ive flown in it a while back. This looks like it could be THE map to draw in the hordes! it really is a fantastic looking map. With several new innovations too.Just wait and see.

Im on anytime from 6pm GMT right through to 3am!!:D, hopefully ill see you in there.

The map truly is a beauty - perhaps the loveliest of all of the CT maps to date.  As Hazed says, though, it has a couple of weaknesses, which by the end of this week have pretty much driven everyone back into the MA.  I think we can learn something from this.

The frame rate hit.  I've got a low-end machine myself (PII 450), and my frame rate drops into the teens when I get near the overcast or over a city.  Still, I'm willing to put up with that.  The overcast keeps the fights down low, which is authentic for the East Front.

Lack of bases.  To my mind, this is the fatal flaw.  10Bears built the map to historical specifications, and I think most of us were right behind him.  This is the CT, after all, and we like to think we're striving for a more historical perspective.  When I first logged on last nite, though, the only uncaptured German base was on the opposite side of the map from the area the Bolsheviks were attacking.  When I logged on later, there was no airbase for German planes.  They'd all been killed/captured.  By tanks.

Now I recognize that AH is becoming more comprehensive, and that tanks have their place (maybe), but the net effect was that anyone who wanted to fly another plane against an enemy plane had to go to the MA.  Because there were so few bases, it was just too easy to eliminate the German air force - and, of course, this was historically what happened.

The foregoing whine is submitted in support of Lephturn's and Lasz' warnings that it might not hurt us to relax the historical accuracy some in favor of playability.

Same here. The low frame rate I get makes it too frustrating. Yes, my system is weak (PIII, 550) but it's fine for all other arenas. Otherwise, this is my favorite CT setup.

Which brings up my question: I don't remember any FR problems with Stalingrad last time. Was the terrain changed?

In any event, I'm sure this will be worked out at which time I'll be back.

The Depo's on the Stalengrad map do indead suport Vehicals, at least the ones with a vh do, while I missed a couple of them in my initial set up (sory guyes), I have made amend's as we have played across them.

The bases on this map are hard to read, at any given time thier are at least 2 bases withen about a sector of each other although yesterday when Olman was on the German's were just about to take A14 back in fact right after that M3 killed him we took the base back:)

Thew big bug aboo about placing strat targets and fields so close together seams to be the frame rate hit and the problem it creates in reading the map, at a clance it is very hard to see the airfields on this map most of the time because of the overlaping strat targets.

The numbers on this map have been up and down, over the weakend they seamed to be runing about the average for peek times 30 or so, during the week I have seen as high as 45 and and back down to the average numbers, also yesterday the numbers seamd to drop a bit, but that is not all that uncomon for a set at the end of it's run, thats wy we do a new set up ever week.
