The maps are getting old
« on: April 25, 2002, 08:56:49 AM »
I feel that flying the same maps with the same strategy that rotate every few hours or days is getting old in a hurry.

Anyone else feel the same?

I wonder when the new maps are due?

If hours online in the MA is any indication, my flying time in the MA has been dropping off over the last year due to same ol' same ol' maps.  I used to regularly put in 125 hours a month...this month for example, 20 hours.  I doubt I'd hit 30 by the months end.  Other things keep me here though, like Tour of Duty, Squadmates, etc.  But MA flying needs an injection of something new, Terrain is a good place to start.

Saw there were a whole bunch of maps to download, but I have seen 3 I think.  Were these just the most popular ones?

just think back to when there was one terrain rotation after each tour! :)  Or even before that... the beta terrain and the 10k A1 field that lasted forever.  I still loved that terrain.  They need to bring back the 10k A1 map :).  What was it called?  sfterr (or is that the uterus filename?)  Also bring back the beta map!

Superfly or one of the HTC staff mentioned a larger version of the beta map being created (i think..)  I cant wait!

I think it would be nice to get new maps, yes. However, something needs to be done to slow the turn-around time for these things.

The uterus map seems to be the worst. From reset to reset, I bet the average uterus life-cycle is less than 8 hours... probably even faster sometimes.

The arena moves WAY too fast, as do the stragetic situations. On busy nights, it is near impossible to generate any sort of tactical mission planning. By the time you spend 20 minutes setting up a mission, getting people joined in and breifed, there very well may be a huge horde of friendlies all over your intended target, or a huge horde of enemies smashing your takeoff field or one right near it. If your mission was designed to give heavy bombers some climbing room, away from the front lines, the whole thing is scrapped, because now the front line is right at your doorstep.

I think strategic elements need to be modified slightly in order to slow the war down to a more realistic pace. There should be limited supplies at fields which dwindle each time a vehicle or aircraft takes off. The supply convoys would have to replenish the supplies if they got too low and prevented any more planes or vehicles from spawning there.

Something like, each supply convoy brings X amount of fuel, X amount of ammo, X amount of ordinance and X amount of Troops. Everytime a plane takes off, it takes away a small amount of fuel, ammo and ordinance (if selected). Once all the available fuel is taken, no more planes can takeoff until the supplies show up, either from convoy or player controlled M3/C47/LVT.

Gawdamned big giant maps might help with the mission problem.

Then there are those that think big gawdamned giant maps will suck.

Screw them I say... screw them.....

Bigger maps will be great right after a reset. But once the war starts going in to a corner, the front lines will be just as small as they are now.

Small front lines on a map that has infinite supplies at all bases means a war that goes way to fast in a very unrealistic manner.

There is no strategy involved in base capture now, it's just shear weight of numbers that plows down the opposition. It's not like you can have any sort of attritain war. With just one fighter hanger and 25% fuel, 20 guys can still takeoff every 5 seconds in an endless wave of N1Ks and Spitfires.

That list includes combat theater, special events maps and the dueling arena.
