That is great we are getting Sakai's Tianan A6M2.

Did anyone ever figure out the identity of the unit and pilot of the A6M5 we have now?

I can't be certain of course, but I believe the A6m5 is also a mount of Saburo Sakai's when he was in the Yokosuka AG in 1944-45. Only the artist knows for sure.

Saburo Sakai flew the A6M2 Model 11, A6M2 Model 21, A5M4 Navy Type 96 "Claude", A6M5 Model 52 and the J2M "Jack". These were the five different planes he flew in combat.

Out of 64 of his kills, 60 of them were in the A6M2 Model 11.  It was also standard practice of the Japanese Naval Air Force not to assign a particular aircraft to a pilot.

Based on what the gang over at http://www.j-aircraft.com have told me, our A6M5b belonged to the 653rd Kokutai based in Kagoshima. If this is the case, our A6M5b would've been turned to scrap during the Marianas Turkey Shoot. I say "if this is the case" because I've been told the tail code is that of a carrier-based bomber, not a fighter.
