Whoa! Their numbers are that low?? Man, I logged in Sunday morning at 4 am in AH to find 85 online, that used to be a Friday night number, now our Friday nights are 400-500.

Rip I was flying weeknights around 10 pm PST and had trouble finding more than 20 people in any non-easymode arena.  The easymode crowd seems to be the largest portion of the WB player base now.  That and S3.

Thats sad..like an old friend slowly dying...I loved WB's, the connects just went south with the move to NC...and the fact that their two best programmers went off to start their own business once again ;)

I've been in their bbs some lately and it looks like death throes over there.. even though those that are left won't admit it.

It just ain't the same.  Most of the guys I flew with are gone now.  I stopped posting over there after I got flamed for suggesting that threats of physical violence were not appropriate.  Still some good guys left but it just ain't the same.

Hmmmmmmm, seems like I've seen these "death of an old friend sim" posts somewhere before. I seem to have a vague memory of a flame fest sprouting up around them too.
Could just be my fuzzy short term memory loss though....;)

Who cares about beginners playing a rewarmed copy of an old defunkt DOS game?

Well, most of us saw the death of AW coming in 1995 (it was just delayed by a weak attempt in AW3 ) when CK came out in beta (later to be named Warbirds). ;)  Again, once AH came out in beta, the writing was on the wall for WB's. Its still thrashing about, but its only a matter of time before it stops breathing altogether.

I have been reading through their boards lately, and a couple things stood out.

1.  Last week was "exodus" week.  Apparently, a lot of old timers left last week after being fed up.

2.  It seems they are missionless.  They claim to be all for full realism, but it seems they are making a shift to compete in the arcade world.  Nobody has a clue what their objective is anymore.  I think if they just ironed out a purpose for existing, owned it, follwed it, then it would end a lot of turmoil.

3.  WBIII seems to be a crock.  I played it for a while, and I never did feel the immersion that I felt in 2.77, or especially Aces High.  Sure, the planes look nicer, but I left as soon as I couldn't tell where I was in the sky anymore.  Plus, I never got used to the dark green ground, the planes not appearing until I was practically on top of them, and that was if I found anyone.

4.  EZ mode?  I like Aces High's ez takeoff feature (I don't use it, but it's there if a newbie can't get off the ground in a corsair) and the combat trim, but dumbing down the flight models?  On a full realism sim?  Either own ful realism, or drop the title.  On upcoming free weekends, it will be mandatory EZ mode.  Sheesh.

Anyhow, too bad, but maybe they will survive with the EZ mode arcade, compete with Microsoft crowd.  Seems that is the direction they want to go (without speaking it).
