Close enough. Actually they were taking a leak on the barbed wire around the launch tower. If they couldn't get to the barbed wire, then the support vehicle's tires were an acceptable substitute. This was a superstitious practice that was used before each flight to the Mir.
"Checking laces" was in reference to the practice of making sure the space suit was fitted properly.
