Damage model for demon trees and angry sheep
« on: November 04, 2001, 10:14:00 AM »
Picture this:
I've pulled myself out of combat to rtb for gas when at about 10 miles out, my gas runs out and I don't have the altitude to get to base.

I have to ditch.

I choose an area because it looks light and happy since I can't see trees more than 300 feet from my airplane anyway to pick a real spot.

SUCCESS!!  Wheels hit the ground and I'm slowing down.

As I'm breaking I realize I may hit a tree so I turn...

My wingtip touches the tree and I explode.

Question:
Can't the tree just take my wingtip and let me land?

Imagine that.. having to avoid trees when you land.  Pretty unrealistic.. aint it? Next thing you know, they'll be moddeling rutts and potholes, and stumps and anything that would reach up and grab your plane from below.

Ever see a car crash at 30mph?  How about 100mph?  What would that do to a plane?

Ditching isn't an easy thing anymore.  I am glad for that.  The sheep and bushes may not be accurate, but the difficulty in wich a)finding a place to ditch and b)successfully pulling it off has been greatly enhanced toward something I find more believable.

I wouldn't have minded if I was going 100 mph when I hit the tree, but I was almost stopped when I hit it.  It's not like the plane was going to go cartwheeling off from hitting the tree.

I appreciate the difficulty in ditching these days, but it'd be nice if I could see a potential landing field farther than a couple hundred feet from my plane.

don't land on wheels.  Belly land it.

But I do agree that they ground vehicles shouldn't be wrecked when they touch a tree.  Only the tree top should be dangerous, letting ground units drive under the solid tip, thru the tree.

Ground clutter is for ground vehicle cover.

Tree are understandable, maybe even sheep, but the little bushes killing my gv's really annoy me.

When I was younger I jumped on a lil bush, did'nt realise there was a stake in the middle of it. Yikes. Lil bushes maybe mined?

Please, do not use this statement to judge the development of all young Australians.

That is all.  Thank you.   ;)
