Frame 3 AAR's Mighty 8th
« on: June 22, 2002, 08:05:37 AM »
Anyone who questions that the B17 is "uber" in AH, needs to read AAR's from the 8th AF.  Our entire squad was wiped clean from the map by excellent tactics actually used in WW2 by our LW friends last night.  Slashing attacks, coodinated with mulitple pilots timing their slashing attacks, staggered "layers" and protection "boxes" that harassed our B17's all the way to Berlin. They picked apart the formation patiently, like a pack of dogs wounding its prey, separating it from the herd, then moving in for the kill.  Losses were high for the LW, but not as high as it was for the 8th AF.

10 sec short of dropping on our Primary, our (MAG-33 and 457th)sole surviving B17 (Pilot Rangerbob) was shot down.

WTG LW, you guys tore a page right out of the history books, and made alot of folks who think B17s are uber look like fools!

Pretty scary stuff ripsnort trying to fly 110's at 30K and position in the right place to have a chance to stop you guys.

Mongrels alone acounted for 13, but we had LOTS of help. Think we saw 1 p51 and he was quickly engaged by one of our escorts. (WTG AUB)
We did lose 5 pilots in the process but that seems like a pretty small number in retrospect.

Lots of teamwork, wingpairs making mirror attacks on the same buff. Regrouping and attacking the next cons inbound right away. And a couple of lucky shots by veteran Serra Hotel sticks.

Like all TOD's this one was as close as you could get to the real thing IMO. 80 min of boredom, 5 min of excitment and 2 min of sheer terror.

First off, and thank you and an apology.

Thanks to the TOD CMs and COs. This event has really brought our squadron back together. We have guys signing up for AH accounts who havent flown in years, and TOD is a large part of that.

And a big apology to the Axis in this frame, with the influx of returning Shills, I think we launched 13 or 14 instead of our 12 Max. I know that there is a score penalty invloved, and I'm sorry about that. We had some trouble setting up, and some numbers got confused. We will do our best to ensure that it doesn't happen again, and I understand that if every squad on our side went over by 2 pilots that the numbers would get out of hand quickly. Again, sorry about that.

Things started out badly for the Shills. I set up a mission that we had gone over pretty well. We were split into two groups of 6 pilots each. The First bounch was in G-2s with drop tanks. The second group was in G-2s with DTs and Gondolas. This should not have been confusing at all, everyone joined the mission, and we were good to go. 12 pilots, 12 slots. We're happy. Then, about 5 minutes before TO, I get dumped (first day on Dialup after 2 years of broadband :( ) When I get back in, I just joined into the mission, and thought everthing was cool. We launched on time, and everything might have been cool, except that several of us noticed that we were in FW A5s, not 109 G2s???? So several of us had to auger it in to change planes, and that mixed our formation up a bit. Then one of our guys was dumped, and two guys showed up late. I'm not sure if -DO- was ever able to get back up (in fact we were having some communication troubles last night, so I'm not sure if he was even able to get up at all ) But when the dust settled we formed up and headed towards our patrol sector.

Before we were on station, it was aparant that they were movingg to the middle of the map, so Wotan Vectored us to their northern flank, and we came into a buff box that was already being hit by the damned. Since we were pramarily after the escorts, we went on a pony hunt (although at this point, wotan expanded our orders to allow us to hit the buffs as well). I saddled up a pony, and sprayed some MG fire at him, hoping to get him to Split S, or otherwise seperate from the buffs. I think he did, but I didn't get much of a chance to watch him, because for the second time in as many weeks, I drifted into a B-17's field of fire. Just like last week, I took an engine oil ping right off the bat, and wound up ditching.

Shillelagh went on to hit the buffs, claiming 3 downed. As the fight continued, The shills managed to engage the P-51s after they had seperated from the buffs (although to be fair, we helped them seperate, by sending the buffs to hell, where the ponys didn't care to follow).  After some fighting at lower alts where our G-2s were able to turn the ponys, the squad was able to kill 2 with one probable.

In the end Shillelagh claimed 5 kills with one probable, with losses of 3 airframes and two pilots.

Also, the Fuher gave me a kick in the ass, took away my wings, and sent me to the eastern front where I might learn "courage" and not to have a mysterious "engine Oil leak" every time I sighted the enemy. While fighting in the infantry, I learned to respect my advisary in the frozen hell that was Russia. I learned what I could about communism, and when I was captured by the Soviet Army, it was easy for me to see how my real enemy was not only facism, which had stolen my life, but indeed all capitalist systems, where men are turned into a resourse to be consumed by anonymous plutocrats. My flesh and blood being used to lubricate the gears of industry.

I rose through the ranks of the party quicky for a non-Russian, and I'm very excited about opportunities I have to serve the proletariate. In fact, I recieved a summons from Stalin himself. It seems that there is an oppurtunity opening up in the extreme north east of Mother Russia. I can't wait, I ship out for Siberia tomorrow. My only question though... What is a Gulag anyhow?

Thats cause us LW got wize:)

I had a Blast this TOD.

First 2 frames I was in a 110,
Orders: KILL BUFFS

Easier said than done, the buffs escorts were well placed and did their job well. The 110's were supposed to have escorts to combat the buffs escorts, so the 110's could do their job, but that never materialized, coordination and timing is sooooo important.

frame 3 we got to ride g10's
ORDERS: Kill buff escorts.

I personally downed 1 p-51, But the main important role was that we disrupted the buff escorts and they got seperated from the buffs, this allowed the 110's to do their job:)

All in ALL a great TOD , CM's looking forward to the next.

Wow, scores are out, and we didn't overclaim at all. That's unusual. I have to say that having the kill logs hidden during the flight adds much more to the emersion that I figured it would. It's very cool to try and establish kill claims, and then see how they fit the reality.

I know that there are many aspects which lead to overclaiming (Prestige, Morale, never knowing the "actual" kill counts) but it's still a very cool feature.

This was my second TOD frame and I was the lucky 109 to find this bomber.  He put a few pings on me but I was going very fast and had a good angle (read: Lucky)
