P-51D vs Ta152 Tips?
« on: July 29, 2002, 08:46:58 PM »
Had my head handed to me when flying a P-51D the other night by a Ta-152 pilot. I think it was dbltrbl, (that was part of the problem I know ;)) but how would you engage a Ta-152?

B&Z a couple times without success (was at night time) then tried the Vert and he was turning inside me, tried the horz and again he was turning inside me, couple of hi yo-yo's and finally ran for my life! Had near by friendly fleet and he broke off. Went after him again and he nailed me.

Yep daddog, it was me. I'm not sure what to tell you. I rarely fly the perk birds when in the MA, and if I do it's usually an F4U-4. I probably only have 3 or 4 152 sorties under my belt and flew it quite cautiously on those, only engaging with advantage. I've never really mixed it up and seen what she could do until our fight. I was very impressed by the Ta's turning ablity. I expected it to be very much like a 190. Needless to say, I was quite surprised to find it gaining angles on your pony in the turns.

I was at about 10k when you attacked, if memory serves. Glancing at HTC's charts, the pony is about 20mph faster at that alt. Climb rates are quite close with a slight edge to the pony. So, in regards to tactics, I'd play it pretty much like you did up until you came back to re-engage. If you start with alt, BnZ and play the E game as long as you can. If no success, then maybe get a bit more aggressive and see how good the pilot is. If it doesn't look good for you then just use your speed to disengage and find an easier target. Of course, the higher the fight goes, the better things look for the 152. If you find one co-E up high in the thin air it likes, I'd take the fight lower asap.

Those are just my thoughts. I'm sure there are some LW experten who have a much better grasp of its abilities than I. I do have much more respect for the 152 now and will treat it accordingly in the future.

BTW fun fight!
