Boxed games I own but dont have time to play
« on: August 10, 2002, 01:06:57 PM »
Im curious to see if im not alone here.  It seems when I can find time to play a game it is always Aces High.  Here is a list of games I bought in the last few years that gather dust.  I guess nothing can compare to playing an online sim.

Maybe I will put them up on ebay what the heck?

1. WW2 Online.  I bought this day it was released with all the anticipation and had every problem you could think of.  A real turd IMO, this one makes a great drink coaster.

2.  Il2.  Never even loaded it but I hear this one is awesome.  If I burn out on Aces High this will be the one that replaces it.

3. Medal Of Honor.  Had a great time with it just would rather play Aces High.

4. B172.  Ibought this one with a gift certificate.  I played only as a gunner so far seamed fun.  I hear this one is kinda like rainbow six with an emphasis on role playing, but not much of a sim.

This one thoroughly pissed me off though because it was to feature online play with multi player crews.

5. Falcon 4.0 (with the binder) got it on a pricing error at best buy for 15 dollars 3 years ago.  This one intimidated me and my interests were more with prop planes.

6. Rainbow Six and  Rogue Spear.  Lots of fun what introduced me to online games.

7. Fighter Squadron (SDOE) It was ok main use was for tuning up for B172 online play.

8. European Air War.  By far the game that re ignited my childhood interests in World War 2 Aviation. IMO this one was one of the best.

9. Air Warrior 2.  I got this one back in 1996 but never really had the patience to play it or my old pentium 75 couldnt handle it.
Wasnt it like 2 dollars an hour to play this one online?  I guess hindsight is 20 20 because if I did play this one maybe I would be a 1/2 decent stick by now.

You are doing yourself a major disservice by not really trying Il-2, especially if you loved EAW. Think "EAW x 10, set in Russia" and you have it. Same rabid following, same add-ons, etc.

Kieran.  I have been tempted to get IL2.  But reading the boards at hyperlobby, and the official one.  I got the impression that it is hard to find an online arena that dosen't have outside views turned on. And other gamey stuff.  Also a lot of cheating going on, according to posts.

What has been your experience with the online game?

I haven't played online- I bought it for the offline campaigns. I know Creamo and a few others do play online, you might ask them.

i've dabbled abit in il2 online.  There are a few hosts which are on full real (no icons, no externals, no turnin off cockpit) but they are definitely in the minority.

I don't bother with the full real hosts myself, the gunnery system and views are such a hurdle that i don't want to deal with that stuff yet +)

The IL2 online war(IOW) and the Virtual Eastern Front(VEF) i think all run at full real.

eaw was much more immerive then il2 especially right out of the box.

fm and eye candy il2 rocks but the campaign that came with it sux. Theres good ones out there but even set at expert levels ai is easy enought to kill.

You ai are complete idiots and will most likely get themselves killed quickly.

The mission builder is easy enough to make your own or theres any number of mission genrators out there but most run variations of 10- 20 scripted missions.

Online its real hard finding good servers. Theres a million idiots out there who cant seem to hit "fly" in under an hour.

Full real is much better then any of the cockpit unlimited ammo DF servers. I rather struggle and squint to spot little grey specks then fly in any medium or easy room.

However the ones with the limited icons (plane type only no range info is good) but those are hard to find. Coops are far better then df servers by far.

However like most box games its tough to just jump on for a quick quality sortie. Its a down right chore at times.

Heres the ip for ubi dedicated servers

205.205.27.79 all planes medium/easy

205.205.27.75 1940 full real/padlock

EAW in its day was far better online and offline
