Dotted skins
« on: October 24, 2002, 05:59:24 PM »
Hello!

I am beginner for skin editing and now I have problem when I convert 24-bit skins back to 256-colours:

I use Irfan View to change the skin file first from 256 colours to 24 bit bmp. All works good, but when I change it after editing back to 256 colours, there are coming dots and spots to my new skins. Dots size are 1 pixel and they look BIG on the skin.

I understand that when I convert back to 256 colour it can't show all the colours from 24 bit bmp. What can i do to eliminate the dots with my Photoshop LE (Limited Edition, cannot convert between different bmp file sizes) and Irfan View or other programs?

What is the best tool to make those patch conversions?

First off you don't need to use irfan to change from a 256 colour to a 24 bit.  You can do this using paint.
Second.. Once you done all the painting on your skin and save it ( still as 24 bit ), and then open it with irfan decrease the colour to 256 do you then
save........ and exit or
save as........(file name) then exit.

I been finding that , save as........(file name) then exit, works better even though the file name that you open is still the file name you want to save.

Meaning, eg. I open Pokie.bmp ( which is 24 bit ) with irfan, decrease to 256 colour and then save as ( box pops up ) I type in Pokie.bmp

If you want you could post the 24 bit skin before and the 256 colour skin after for us to see what is wrong.

it's all about how your software converts the colors.

I don't know the software at all since I use photoshop but I can tell you that I have to tell the PALLETE to use 256 color PERCEPTUAL as opposed to ACTUAL.

I'm sure it depends on your software but I'd bet there's a setting there somewhere that lets you specify HOW the conversion to 256 color happens.

In Corel it prompts you for a few different ways to convert back to 256 colors, I use the "optimized" prompt.

I see what you mean kanttori.
You don't notice until you zoom both pictures to the max.
It gets better when I decrease the 24bit to 256 color using my scanner program.
But.... I guess it all come down to what Nuttz has been saying for a long time now.... get yourself a good paint program.

P.S I was looking to see if things work better with the Gimp program.  Its late now, I'll have to look at it tomorrow.
Gimp was posted here in this TE section within the last month.

Problem solved with a neat little program called Bright
its only 60kb zipped ( 108kb unzipped )

it will convert multiple 24 bit bmp files to 256 color bmp at one time.  Tried it with 6 skins, program automatically converted all 6 of them to 256 color bmp's.

very easy to use
runs in ms-dos prompt
and it seems to convert perfectly.

Tested it, by taking an original plane bmp texture, converting it to 24 bit then using the program to convert it to 256 color bmp

This is the program

This is the simple example of how I set it up to be used.
