Specifically, is higher better or lower?

ENY is a measure of how common the plane is.  The lower the number, the more common(Roughly, low eny = better plane)

It's used in figuring perk points.
The perks for a kill are your planes ENY divided by your victim's ENY.

higher eny means more perks earned, at somewhat more of a challenge.

There are numerous high ENY(30-40) planes which are excellent aircraft, and great for earning perks in.  F4U-1 and la5 come to mind.

So, does this possibly explain why I'm not having real good luck with a Spit I, or are the V and IX just more common, not necessarily better? I started out flying a P-40B (big AVG fan), but was totally outclassed in the MA, which is where I spend most of my time. I don't like B 'n Z type planes... HATE the P-51D. I'm getting better at E fighting, but still prefer a good angles fight. Asking for opinions here... which plane (non-perked) gives the best compromise between E fighting and angles fighting? Thanks for any and all replies!

now that eny has been explained, can someone tell me what OBJ is?

for me, anything with an ENY lower than 30 is dweeby.  i fly the 190a5 and get a lot of perks for it since it has en ENY of 36.  but when the base has its fuel porked, i fly the "dweeby" d9 because it can stay up in the air longer.

i used to take-off from the cv in an f4u-1 and vulch the living hell out of the nearby enemy field but i got bored of it and the far hitting 50cals.  the la-5 is also nice but i i dont know why it has that bouncy feel which i dont like.

anyway to hell with 'em and just fly the plane you want, i still hate all those spits/nikis/la7/pony dweebs out there though:p

OBJ is like eny for OBJects.  If you are in a plane with an OBJ rating of 25, you will get half as many perks for killing a building as a plane with an OBJ rating of 50.  It comes into play with Jabo mostly, but most of the attack planes are the same OBJ value anyway.

Exactly, the spit1 can turn, but it's guns(8 .303s) are nearly useless against heavily armored later war fighters.  IMO the p-40B's eny is WAY too low, it's performance is more like the spit1 and 202 than anything else.

In general between a 40+ eny plane, and a 10 eny plane, the 10eny is an easier plane to get kills in.  ENY's aren't any specific measure, but can give you an idea of what you're flying.

As for planes, I'd reccomend trying everything, find something you're comfortable in, don't be afraid to try new planes or tactics.

Thanks for the reply, Innominate. Being a relative new guy, I'm just doing my best not to get killed every time out. The reason I liked the P40B was twofold: it dives like nobody's business, and is just plain tough.... hard to get kills in though(at least it was for me). I guess I'll try the SpitV and IX next, then maybe the N1K. I don't care about being called a dweeb, I just want to start earning some points!

If you want to earn some perks...fly the P47D-11.  Its not the best jug, but it is the best-turning jug and it has an ENY of 40 (I think).  Keep it fast and try not to turn too much and you should do well in it.  Plus it has those 8- 50 cals up front that throw out a wall of lead.

Sounds like you need to try the P-38.  Remember to use 2 notches of flaps 250 mph and below when in a knife fight.  It will save your life .  Great armament package with 4 x .50's in the nose along with 1 x 20mm Hispano cannon in the middle, so no convergence necissary.

P.S. remember to hold K until your elevator is about 3/4 trimmed up when you enter a fight, and you'll be much more competitive.

You're not going to earn any perks flying the low ENY planes.

Besides the p47, a few higher ENY planes worth trying,
F6F(Good E fighter, can take damage, turns well at speed)
F4U-1(Fast.  Excellent turning ability at speed)
La5(Quick accel, fairly fast, good turn ability.  Bad guns though you need to get close)
Hurri IIC(Excellent turning ability and guns, little ammo and low speed though)
FM2(An amazing turner, kind of slow but can dive extremly well.  Armed with four .50's and lots of ammo.)

I'd say the F6F is probably the best overall balance between turnfighting and E-fighting.  Other good choices might be the LA5, 109G-2, P-38 and maybe Spit 5

ooJABoo.... hopefully I'll get time to try 'em all. I really like the overall flying characteristics of the Spit I, but it's kinda like bringing a sewing needle to a knife fight. Plus its inability to pull neg G is really irritating. Next on my list is the FM2, then F6F. BTW, I learned some valuable lessons about E fighting from you in the TA. Thanks for the tips!

I'd add the Fw190A-5 and A-8 as great high ENY value planes.
