Using Voice: Is It Worth it?
« on: October 21, 2002, 03:09:14 AM »
I now have the ability, but have not yet tried, to use Roger Wilco with AH.  I have a 56k modem only.  It seems to me that some pilots complain that using voice makes the program drag (warping ec) when online.

Q:   Does Roger Wilco cause the program to lag on 56k modem?

Q:   Do you use Roger Wilco?  If so, do you use it only on broadband?

Thanks in anticipation,

Ah has a built in voice system so roger wilco isnt necessary. And with 56k you can use vox but I wouldn't depend on it to work to well with such a limited bandwith. Broadband connections there is plenty of bandwidth and vox is more reliable. I wouldn't use rw with AH due to the fact it is using a part of your connection as well as the game itself, try using AH voice first.;)

Hi Dr Lecter,
Like you I only have 56k and I'm based in the UK also.

No problems using AH voice here. A vast improvement over using RW (At least for me).

I do find if I get the dreaded "Lost UDP" message it all goes down the toilet though :( If that does happen and I cannot relog because of I'm in a TOD or similar I just retune vox to some obscure channel that no one is using to keep flying.

AHvoice is not only worth it, you're crazy not to use it.

I can't help but wonder why you'd want to use RW when AH has its own built-in voice comms. Not to mention that by default RW uses F12 to talk, same as AH's range channel.

AHVoice is one of the best things to happen to AH during the last year!  :)

Now, if just at least those US players could try to pronounce words a bit more exact and speak a bit slower, it would really be great.

I only mentioned RW because I thought you needed it for AH.

Anyway, tried yesterday to use mic and no joy.  I got my own radio channel set up and I know the mic works ok.  The dialog boxes are all ticked in the voice settings, but I'm a bit stuck now.

Help!

Dr Lecter,
First use the built in recorder that came with Windows to make sure your mic and speakers are working:

Start:Programs:Accessories:Entertainment:Sound Recorder

After you know your mic and speakers are working, goto the Main Arena and tune your radio to channel 101, the default channel when you first log in.  You should find at least a few people using it.

>>> .radio 5 101 <<<
Easy in-game again.

You can also tune vox to yourself, and if everything is working you'll hear yourself.

I have used both RW and Voice at the same time, with both dial-up and cable without any problems.

Our squad has a RW server set up,so logging in and then using both is easy, since we use the voice activated setting for RW,and F12 for AH.

Using AH vox is great.  Getting it set up was a bit tricky, but once it was, there's really no going back.   Keep trying things until it works, you will be glad you did.
