I'm talking about the announcers. The play by play analysts. The guys behind the desk on ESPN or Fox or whatever...

Which ones do you like? Which ones cause you to turn the volume off on the television and grab a radio?

I'll even go first...

GOOD:
Tom Jackson. You've had to have watched ESPN for the past fifteen years to see how much he's improved.

Sterling Sharpe. All ego aside, he's far better at this than Deion Sanders can ever hope to be.

Joe Theisman. Some people hate him. I didn't much care for him as a player but I liked watching he and Chris Mortensen go at it on ESPN.

Terry Bradshaw. What's not to like about Terry? To dislike Bradshaw is to dislike Americans. :)

Howie Long. He's going to be around forever.

Phil Simms. I have no idea why. Phil is just easy to listen to.

Dan Fouts. A guy that can do play by play and analysis. MNF should have got rid of Michaels and kept Fouts with Madden.

Len Dawson.

TOLERABLE:
Chris Berman. Maybe it's just that come over. That or I've never heard him do play by play.

John Madden. I have just one thing I dislike about Madden. In every game he identifies one player who is the "best in the game" and "made all the difference today". It's almost formulaic.

Al Michaels. The only thing going for Michaels is the fact that he was better than Dierdorff and Gifford. Now that their gone, I wouldn't mind seeing him go to Sunday.

Jimmy Johnson.

OUCH:
Dan Dierdorff. Glad he's no longer on MNF. What a pompous ass.

Deion Sanders. Lots of flash. Unlike Michael Irvin, he can actually speak. Is it worth hearing? Probably not.

Michael Irvin. He's not as bad a Lawrence Taylor, but he's close.

Dennis Miller. WRONG! I like Miller. His cable show is a hoot. He needs to stay the hell away from football. Maybe baseball could use him.

Chris Collingsworth. Makes me want to throw things at the television.

Jerry Glanville. He must be smarter than he seems...

Marty Schottenheimer. I'm so glad he went back to coaching. He's got a style of speech that's just painful to listen to.

I don't watch the shows... so no comment there.  As far as watching/listening to the games go...

I simply cannot stand Joe Theisman.  He will harshly critique every single move a quarterback makes.  I remember when Joe played... perfection was not a term used to describe him.

There is a trend that I see across the board.  Everything is being over analyzed and overblown.  They breakdown/critique each and every play now.  They have really made the game less fun for anyone that used to enjoy it.  Now they are catering to people that didn't really think much of it before, but find it interesting.

The fans know football.  Who they are catering to now I don't really know.  I just know its not the loyal fans.

Oh...

Some of the new coaches are simply the worst coaches I have ever seen before.

Another one I can't stand in Merril Hodge. He is just like Theisman in that he will critique everything that every player and coach did on game day and find that 90% of their moves were wrong. But he also falls into the same category as what DejaVu said about Theisman...he was not perfection when he played either.

I like the Sunday Night crew on ESPN.

I think they would be better doing the Monday Night game.

Al and John just don't go well together.
I have been reborn a new man!

Notice I never said a better man.

Dan Dierdorf annoys the toejam out of me.

The whole CBS pregame show staff is horrible.

John Madden is probably my favorite announcer, but I think Joe Theismann and Pat Whathisname have a good chemistry.

Surprisingly, Troy Aikmann and Daryl Johnston do a decent job of color commentary.

Mark Malone (aka Tom Selleck) isn't too bad on NFL2Night.

Off the topic, but I think the best athlete-turned-broadcaster is Charles Barkley. He's entertaining and honest.

When I read the title, first thing I thought of was Owens for SF 49'ers.

I can't stand John Madden.  It's not that he's horribly bad, it's just that he sometime gets confused and forgets or messes up some of the players names. He was great back in the day, but now he's just depressing. He's getting old.

Maybe he just makes me aware of my own mortality, and I don't like that ;)
