Web Site w/Aces High Plane set
« on: November 03, 2002, 02:05:45 PM »
I've been looking for a site that has all the Aces High aircraft and vehicles on it. What I'm looking for is the Characteristics of each plane and vehicle. I have all the books for each aircraft, but I would like a one stop site with all this. I've had friends at work interested in Aces High and they have asked what type of aircraft and vehicles are in it. I would like to point them to a site with all this information.
So, if you could post any and all sites like this, it would be greatly Appreciated.

Personally I don't agree on everything that's said here but it's a very good page for someone new to AH and fits to your describtion fairly well. :)

Wmaker,
I'm always open to input.... I knew I couldn't put together something that even half the people in the game would agree with, but I'm always interested in what some people have to say.

Comments on any plane in particular?

Soda, I like the way you have your site laid out and the input you have for every plane. Very Nice. You will never be able to please everyone, but, you'll off to a great start on making a great site. Thanks.
I would like to add one comment. Can you also add GV's and the PT boat to your site?

Thanks Guys for the input.

Hello Soda!

Yeh as you said everyone has his own opinions how to fly and fight in these birds. So all my comment meant that "this isn't the only truth" or something like that...don't think you meant it to be either. :)

I really appriciate what you've done since I haven't seen anything similar on AH planes anywhere else in the net. Must have taken A LOT of time and effort to do the write ups! Only thing one can base this kind describtions on is one's experiences and it's only natural that people have different experiences on same planes.

Right now I don't recall anything particular on any single plane but if I can find the time I'll read the planes I usually fly again and e-mail you what I agree/disagree on.

One thing that in general comes to mind is WEP's affect on fuel consumption. Haven't done any tests (remember reading some tested it here on the BBS) but I'm fairly sure that WEP gives the same fuel consumtion as 100% mil power. Many times I've managed to return in a Bf109G-X on fumes because of WEP. I've noticed that when you find yourself on the deck with very low fuel the best tactic is to hit WEP and climb as high as you can and when you think you have only seconds of fuel left shut down the engine and glide to the base. If you lower MAN and try economic cruise you're going in for a swim. :)

I'm really sorry if I've come off negative here Soda because basically I think you site is great and I'm glad someone took the effort to finally make that kind of page!

I'm always open to opinion, but when I wrote these pages I tried to look at each plane fairly objectively with the mind-set that the average pilot can only really extract about 80% of the performance out of a plane.  Things like climb, top speed, well, those are not really skill related (climb can be) but for things like turn-rate it's really based on pilot skill and flight conditions.  I'm certainly not completely familiar with every plane though, there are lots and some I've only flown a bit, but I've been around AH for a long time (since pay-to-play) so I've either been in a plane, or faced hundreds of them.  That's where the comments come from.  If anyone can offer tips/advice/impressions though, I'm all for it, since the more comments we can incorporate the better.  I was a little hard on some planes, and I'm actually looking at reviewing a couple of them right now, but it takes time.  I figure I spent a couple of hundred hours testing planes and writing HTML to get what's there right now.

I'm pretty sure WEP burns fuel at 2x rate.  Try flying a Spit some time and use WEP a lot, your fuel with absolutely disappear.  Without using WEP you can seem to cruise forever.  Having multiple tanks makes for difficult judgements on fuel use since each tank has a different volume of fuel.  Something with only 1 tank (Spit, La7, La5?) all seem to burn fuel twice as quickly with WEP on.  Someone tested this at one point and came up with the double burn rate, and I thought that was accepted, but I haven't tested it myself recently.

Jag34, glad you found the site useful, and there is a lot of imformation to digest on it so make sure you check back often.  I'll see what I can do about adding some GV information and PT's for a near-future release.  They should be much easier to comment on than the planes since there are fewer variable factors involved.  The whole idea of the site was to give newer, and intermediate, players a place to go and check out aircraft.  It would help pick planes to fly, help with better ways to fly them, and help with ways to beat planes you were having problems with....

In the help section on the HTC site under planes and vehicles, fuel burn rates are listed for some of the original AH aircraft (P-51D, P-38L, Fw 190a8, F4U-1D). From the write up on the P-51D:

Packard Merlin V-1650-7
Emergency Power- 67" @ 3000 RPM, 210 GPH (5 minutes)
Military Power- 61" @ 3000 RPM, 150 GPH
Normal Power- 46" @ 2700 RPM, 86 GPH
Max Cruise- 36" @ 2400 RPM, 71 GPH

So yes, WEP does increase fuel burn but it doesn't double it. At least according to HTC. I'm too lazy to test it but it might be interesting to see the results if anyone is inclined to do so.
