...and the pelt looks good hanging on my wall. Last night, I noted a flashing allied base (I was flying allied at the time), and jumped to the tower to look around. There were no radar contacts, so I scanned about for ground vehicles. The field ack gave me a bearing, and I spotted an enemy tank approaching the field's perimeter. I thought for a moment to grab a man-able ack position, the elected a Panzer-IV instead.
Spawn-engine start-accelerate out of the spawn point, then turn to put the forward hull toward the enemy tank. He was about 2000 yards out and firing on a hanger. I lurched to a stop and began firing AP rounds. The first hit must have got his attention, because his turret slewed around and began firing. I didn't notice at the time that the enemy tank's color was different. He hit me once, but all other shots bracketed me ahead or behind me. I got one more hit, then he moved over a couple hundred yards and stopped again. I guess he figured it would throw my aim off, which it did.
I fired a couple more ranging shots, then clicked on empty. "Oh for the love of..." I had forgot to change my standard load out from mostly HE to mostly AP, and had quickly burned through the AP. Darn! Switched to HE and began hoping for a lucky shot. I hit him three more times, and didn't even see smoke. Geeze, this suckers tough, I thought. He moved again, but this time he left his hull broadside to me. Two more hits and he suddenly blew up.
That was when the hapless enemy tanker notified me it was his first time out in a Tiger tank! Holy-moley, no wonder he wouldn't die! "Yikes," I replied, "If I'd have know that, I'd have stayed in my barracks!" Anyway, was fun. to that guy (can't recall his call-sign).
