HI-res terrains
« on: December 30, 2002, 01:56:25 AM »
Smth walking over my head since couple months, now i must ask

If somone remember WB have 2 diferent cockpits resolution , low /640x480/ and high /1024x768/. When somone in old days have better graphics card and stronger pc download Hi res graphics and enjoy better quality of cockpits /in 3d mode/

As i know game engine / AH/ can accept hi-res bitmaps   when somone plug in them to his own terrain.
Thats give smoothest bitmap /slower graphics?/
and all is depend from speed of AH client PC /or not?/
I supose multigen reality cant give us same graphics quality like Il2 graphics engine, but i hope HTC can give us choice about using low-res or hi-res bitmaps..

As standard HTC give us 256x256 bitmaps world, why not build extra pack with high res bitmaps as add on ?

If all bitmaps are placed in my own PC why we cant chose bitmap resolutionm, anyone know why we cant do that?

with respect

Each 256x256 texture uses 14kb of video card memory, if HTC increased textures to 512x512 minimum system requirements and download size would probably double.

Try that POS IL-2 for an example of how 512 and 1024 textures impact system performance.

512x512 texture = 4 times bigger on disk (uncompressed) than 256x256. 1024x1024 16 times bigger than 256, How do you get 14kb in vid mem for a 256x256 texture? They're 65k on disk, 14kb is really small. I don't know much about how vid cards process the information but I assume there's some sort of compression going on somewhere...?

As for performance hit... depends on your card. My GF3 gets precisely no performance hit at all with a small number of aircraft flying around (H2H on my lan with high res aircraft) I guess problems might start to arise when a situation arises when the amount and size of textures shown on screen start exceeding the amount of vid memory on your card? would be nice but I can see that it'd be a lot of work.

som ppls have stronger graphic cards then GF2 /like me/ and stronger CPU.
PC speed and video cards technology going forward, now we have GF4 in a 6 months GF5?
I play IL2 and saw how he slow down, but thats was 1 year ago.

For older PC standard terrains pack, for newst HI-res option.
Imho thats keep playable game for ppls who not upgrade PC for longest time, and  show new futures for AH
