USB X36, Athlon XP, Win98
« on: January 08, 2003, 08:38:36 PM »
I recently bumped up my FSB from 100Mhz to 133Mhz (266Mhz) to get more speed...

This has now caused my X36 to a)screw up the system, b)occasionally show up as an Unknown Device, and c) piss me the hell off.

The only help on Saitek's page is to download an updated USB driver for Win98SE.. I don't have SE, and I have a 56K modem, so I won't update to SE...

However, I'm not sure that's the problem... when I take the FSB back down to 100Mhz (200), it reads the device fine... put it back up to 133Mhz (266), and it goes back to an unknown device... this is simply a reboot, I don't unplug it or anything.

My USB Mice (one optical wheel mouse, one optical trackball) work fine and have caused no problems...

Is my stick done and do I need to get a replacement? Do I need to put XP on my machine? Do X36s work with XP?

Or is my USB speed too high anyway because of the higher rate FSB clock for the X36 to ever work again?

The times I do get it to read as a X36, I can play games fine... for about 10 mins... then it locks up and I gotta reboot...

For a while leaving the X36 plugged in resulted in windows protection errors, recently it hasn't been doing it...

Save me jebus!!!!

This is jebus speaking ... ;)

I'm using the X45 (and formerly a X36) under XP since about one year without any trouble ...

You can make the switch to XP (provided your machine can handle XP weight)

I can see no reason for the behaviour of your X36 (my Pc is overclocked and I never got any trouble, I've an Athlon 1ghz ov to 1.4)

You would better ask on this BBS : http://saitek.63rd.co.uk/

Concerning XP you have several driver option :
• Stock windows driver
 • Saitek XP driver
 • Dauzhimmer driver
 •
Now about the programmation of the stick :

Windows driver it's just a question of directX boutons you have to map each at your taste using AH internal mapper

Saitek driver you have something SGE like you can use to program the stick.
Quite intuitive but some SGE fonctions are not availlable for exemple you don't
have cycle command an feature I use for IL2 to have a zoom working like in AH (the W toggle)

D's driver quite crude but efficient with D's driver you have to use either an
Hexa editor to build a profile (that's why I say crude :p)
Or use a third partie tool to build one (easyest for non nerd slacker like us ;))

You have 3 tools availables :

Smeghead profile editor : old an unsupported derated and so on
Hazard script : easy to use but not acces to advanced function like axis banding or toggle
XD profile : unintuitive for non-english speaker (you're not concerned obviously ;))
But the current "état de l'art" (state of art ?) for programming the X36

I'm currently (after several changes among the 3 drivers :D) using the D's driver plus a XD profile.

Feel free to contact me throught the forum or by mail.

S!

I had strange probs with my X36 USB, SGE 3 & Win98se.  Lockups, sticky keys and last dead hotas.

After some search from inet, I found solution from SimHQ's Saitek Help site.

Everything works now perfectly.

Yes Moose... but most motherboards also autodetect the FSB... in my case it didn't, so I ran a couple months underclocked, and now am at the proper speeds. THe only thing it really mattered in was stressful games (OFP, RTCW, Il2).. AH was for the most part not affected.

The locking up part I've solved- it was due to a motherboard config that wasn't working well enough to enable... so I disabled it and everything is good.. except the joystick isn't recognized by Win 98....

I've pretty much decided to go ahead and upgrade some of my hardware, and so will put XP on...

Straffo- the profiles I end up creating myself, but does the SGE type software for XP allow for the mode toggle switch (M1, M2, M3 switch) and auxiliary switch (I use for Zoom, but is the slide switch above the mode switch) to be programmed?

And do the rotary knobs work with XP?

Thanks for the answers guys.

All the toggles switch works with the SST (SGE XP version) and you can import a SGE profile in SST

The rotary works with XP you can either map them using banding like in SGE or use them as axis (for trim in IL2 for exemple)
