WinXP Pro services

Skuzzy, thanks for the list of Win2000/XP services that the casual PC user can disable.

Can you provide a list of WinXP Pro services that are not necessary?  I disabled most of the one's in your sticky thread, but I still have about 25 that are enabled.  And this is after I just installed the OS.

Thanks,
Mickey

you know that if you hit f1 and do a search for the services it'll tell you what they do.  You could base your decision on that,  You probably won't need IPSEC enabled for one...

I was deliberately conservative with the list of what to disable.  There are more items that can be disabled, but are very dependent on other things.

For instance, you can disable the DHCP program if you have a static IP address for your Internet connection.

I did not list IPSEC as there are times it is required within any given organization.

Other than that, you pretty much need to decide what you can live without and what you can live with.  I cannot make any further recomendations due to potential problems they could cause due to the very different way people use thier computers.

This site  has an excellent explanation of XP Services.  I disabled 20.  It is totally safe cause you can turn one back on if something stops working. http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm

Here is the table or you download the printable pdf version on the first link. http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Nothing I could see since I have a Gig of DDR 2100, but it can't hurt to turn of services that are never used.  Several of them I turned off were also potential security leaks.

Take a note of what you disable so you can turn it back on. Be careful. apparently things like "scheduled tasks" do stuff you don't think of,(can't remember what) and if like me your gaming machine is a network client be extra careful.
