Weird XP problem that has me stumped, give me your thoughts
« on: April 17, 2003, 03:36:50 AM »
This just started happening 2 days ago. I'll start up the pc. I try to load a program say  all seeing eye. Nothing will happen. I open the task manager and it shows an instance of the program running using no resources. I try to end the process on that program but nothing happens.. I'll try to run another instance of the all see eye program and again nothing happens. Then like 15 minutes later the 1st instance of the program shuts down and the second will give me the "not responding" error. This happens with games too. I'll try to load a game and it will stall forever then give me a "not responding errror" . I have no idea what is causing this.. I ran virus scan and found nothing.. Im completely lost. Any ideas before I format and smash things?

SunKing i am pretty sure u wont find the cause of these error. To me it sounds like 1 of the errors ull find by accindent of never.
U better reinstall before u mess around with settings.

I've had the same problem for awhile.  only on a couple programs.  they seem to shut down but leave some small trace of themselves running that wont let the program restart. you can run any other program fine, but you just can't run that one and if you check you'll see that it is running using no memory.

all I've found is a resart  to clear it up and then it may run for several days before it ever happens again

Happened to me once..... rebooted...never again..... your first mistake however was turning the cpu off...... I have at least 3 running 24/7...... when I was in tech support for mainframes I noticed that those that were on 24/7 had far less problems then those that were turned off....... I think its the heat cycling thing with the componets......

Well I formatted for the  umpteenth time.  Things seem to work again. I have no idea why it did that.

Its looks like virus, try other antyvirus software first
next chk integrality of HDD space and chk for errors
If not thats can be registry problems or  wrong mainboard settings /clock, bus mhz/

Chk temperature of CPU
have u problem with power in your home? net shot down or shut down PC  by un-plug whire?

System restore

Perhaps you should look into setting up the system restore function, in case something like this happens again.  It's better than a reformat-and-reinstall.

Another nice option is to make a Ghost Image of the HD, once you get the operating system and most of your applications setup, with Norton Ghost (comes with the antivirus package).

Mine is setup on about 10 CD's, and I can immediately go back to a "clean" system with everything setup.  Much more efficent than to reformat and reinstall the OS.

Where do I find this option? My system is running perfect at the moment. It would be a good time to do that.

There were no viruses, HDD temp was low 20c and I have no power issues, had to be some o/s gltich...again.

Look in accesories, mine is constantly copying setups every couple days, it was setup that way since out of the box, I never had to setup myself, may be the case for you too.
I have used it a couple times already when I was getting weird things happening or if I thght there was a virus possibility. One thing to note tho, it sets your puter back to the settings that were on that date copied, but does not remove any software or virus or bot program that you may have inadvertantly loaded(read porn site visited auto download ooops :) )
So you will still need to find any program problems and delete if needed that you may have loaded since that last copy date
