Sounds like Damnation Alley which, IMHO was the worst movie ever made.  But, I was in mid 20s when I saw it!  Starred Jan Michael Vincent and was yet another of his loser movies starring his stupid yammerhammer motorcycle fetish.

Not that it messed me up ( was in 20's) but a pretty damn spooky/freaky movie is Jacob's Ladder.

If you haven't seen this movie or haven't heard of it, you should check it out. It's trip,.

I foreseee a trip to Blockbuster. I was like 5 when I watched that movie, and I though it was cool as sh*t.
