Haven't heard a Merlin or an R2800 so far this year.  Must... attend... airshow.

I thought you were going to quit again, without an account, which would have been a new record, if not impossible to do.

I've heard an ASH 82FN. Have you? :)

Which sounds better, Merlin or Griffon?

Personally, I liked the sound of that FM-2, though I don't recall what kind of engine that was.

The Ash82 sounds suitably Russian - 'agricultural' the commentator said. It sounded like a 400 mph tractor. :)

"Which sounds better, Merlin or Griffon?"

Merlin.

The Griffon has a kind of lumpy roughness which would be very attractive in a V8; but doesn't compare to the ripping-calico sound of a well tuned Merlin on full song.

And......

I hate to admit it; but the Packard Merlins sound a bit sweeter than the RR ones (judging by tractor pulls, the only place I've heard both at the same time).

How ever the absolute bestest, sexiest sound of 'em all is the Sabre, leaky clunk box that it was.

You've heard a Napier Sabre run? I didn't think they were any around!

And why the hell isn't it in an air-worthy typhoon?

I personally like the griffon - at high speed of course. Idling it sounds like a bag o' bollocks.

Griffons sound great.  Especially with contra-props.

Hehe...I live five minutes from the Canadian Warplane Museum.Like "Five O'Clock Charlie" from *MASH*...Every Saturday afternoon at 1pm I have the only flying Lancaster in North America pass directly over my house at 1000'....I must be in the take off circuit or something.

I'll see if I can post a pix soon from my swimming pool...
