Online Sim or Offline Sim for realism?
« on: July 29, 2003, 09:43:14 AM »
I used to think that Online Sims like AH were the only choice for realism.  When I say realism here- I mean total experience- not just Flight Models.  After all- Online Sims have only people flying the planes not AI.  Forgotten battles has changed that opinion.  In AH we have fuel porking-suicide dwebes etc….. little penalty for being killed.  The AI in FB’s seem to want to stay alive.  Just like real life.   In AH we have many good sticks doing fancy maneuvers like rolling scissors and barrel rolls engaged in large furballs.  In FB-full real- identifying the con and setting up for a blindside “hit and run” is as good as most can do.  From  what I’ve read-even Aces did little more than that in WWII.  I guess what I’m saying is that well programmed AI- coupled with a good sim like FB’s can be Superior to an Online sim for realism.

Thats for that thumbs up RIP....I feel so much better.

The downside of the offline world is that  AI do have patterns that can be identified and exploited....I guess.

RIP is that statement good for you..please let me know I'm really worried that you won't like it.

Completely depends on how  you define realism.

Personally, I feel that AI is one of the biggest contributors to lack of realism in flight sims today.  Programmed precise, programmed lack of precision, programmed response.  With people, you never really know what you're up against until you get into it... and no two responses are the same.

It seems like it would be possible to program AI to do irrational random things.  I know one thing that has plagued all offline sims is lack of agressive AI.  Wonder why?  People are way over-agressive in the MA compared to real life WWII combat...I guess thats obvious.  AI really must be tough to program because some sims just suck at it.  Be interesting what HiTech comes up with for AI in TOD?

What is the best AI some of you guys have seen in Flight SIMS??
