I think it is truly a matter of skill. In the bob I doubt any 109 pilot wouldve gotten slow enough to hear the forward slats flop out. That means they would turn inside both the spit and the hurri at speed (greater than 200mph).
Also, the 109 wouldve been close to half a tank at the point of dogfighting, while the hurri and the spit would have been highly variable in fuel load.
Only real disadvantage the 109 had was roll rate and loadout.
After farting around with eagler in a 109f and myself in a hurri2 I will never underestimate the turning ability of a 109. Or the stall behavior (which I was realying on) most guys lose it when 109 is near stall, other guys kick your butt.
course at high alt (greater than 15k) the hurricane (any model) will kick a 109s arse. Not like you seem them up there often in an even fight.
