Plane comparison

Posting this here as well as AC/Vehicles since I figure the smartest guys are in CT:

Reading Len Deighton's "Fighter" about the Battle of Britain and he details the competing aircraft and states that the 109e turned inside both the Hurricane and Spitfire--though by a small margin.

Is this accurate?  In AH I find the Hurri turns inside both the Spit and 109e and that the 109 is usually the poorest in a flat turn.

Deighton's comparison was strictly one of wing loading, design, etc.  His chart appears to be a flat turn only, no vertical, but yeah, I'd expect the 109e  to outdo the Hurri in vert, but not the Spit with it's superb e-management.

my spits and hurris will out turn 109s. if eagler or shane are flyin the 109 then all bets are off. get eagler eagler to show you what he can do in a 109 at low speeds.

My AH experience also agrees that the Hurri 1 is the best turner of the three.  The spit 1 seems a bit better than the 109e.  the 109e seems to climb much better than the hurri, and a tab better than the spit 1.

I think it is truly a matter of skill.  In the bob I doubt any 109 pilot wouldve gotten slow enough to hear the forward slats flop out.  That means they would turn inside both the spit and the hurri at speed (greater than 200mph).

Also, the 109 wouldve been close to half a tank at the point of dogfighting, while the hurri and the spit would have been highly variable in fuel load.

Only real disadvantage the 109 had was roll rate and loadout.

After farting around with eagler in a 109f and myself in a hurri2 I will never underestimate the turning ability of a 109.  Or the stall behavior (which I was realying on)  most guys lose it when  109 is near stall, other guys kick your butt.

course at high alt (greater than 15k) the hurricane (any model) will kick a 109s arse.  Not like you seem them up there often in an even fight.

I think the Spitfire has tigher and slower corner velocity and a better sustained corner rate than the 109E.
