weirdest thing ever, check this out
« on: December 17, 2003, 03:56:11 AM »
I get home from work today and I am the only person in my apartment building. I sit down at the computer and start working away on some skool stuff and i can hear a radio station playing.

Barely audible but still loud enough that i can tell what song is playing.

Stereo is off, even the speakers are off on the computer.

Anyway, get closer to 5 o clock and the apt building starts to fill up.  Too much background noise to hear the radio anymore.

I get up for a drink of water at about 3 am and decide to try it out again. Boot up the computer and the instant the monitor turns on, the sound starts again.

I cant really pinpoint where the sound is coming from, but im sure it is not the speakers (which are beside the monitor)

Best sound i can get is by tilting the lamp next to the monitor and speakers to allow the shade to act as a sort of bell. Still barely audible but you can make it out.

Weirdest part is...it keeps playing the same 4 or 5 songs, but it is definately a radio station because they talk in between the songs.

Worst part is...the g/f hsa bad ears and cant hear it at all.

At first i thought i was just overtired or something but after some sleep and the apt building quieted down i was able to replicate it.

So what gives? Can CRT monitors give off some sort of radiation that can pick up radio signals? and if so how is it making it audible?

This is by far the strangest thing i have ever experienced.

Anyone know about radio or monitors and why this would happen?!?!?!

Oh yeah, i have a daytek 953DF that i got just over two weeks ago and havent really used it much unitl recently. Never experienced this with the old monitor.

If you have a new computer, it can be that one. Same thing happened to me with my office computer (a new hp compac) apparently there must be some sort of internal speaker inside the computer box, and whenever there are no external speakers plugged in, that internal speaker activates. It deactivates when you plug in external speakers, or when you use the sound manager to turn off teh sound.

PC beeper is a good possibility or maybe the case itself?. My father had an electric piano in the '70s and it sometimes received ATC when it was turned off. He even had to move it to a different room because it was so annoying.

When I was living in Swindon, UK and had purchased a new set of speakers, i'd catch a german opera radio whenever i turned the speakers off. it was odd, and didn't help me apreciate opera.

You'd be surprized what will pick up radio signals..I have a octave/fuzz box for guitar that picks up radio through a guitar amp.

I heard somewhere that some people could pick radio transmissions in their fillings.

That is very strange and there must be a good logical reason (unless its your imagination) but in order for something like that to happen, assuming its being caused by some strange radio wave anomoly, you would still need a radio reciever unit of some sort to convert the raw analog signals to your speaker signal or some sort of speaker in this case your monitor? The chances that your computer monitor can convert a raw radio signal to audible coherent noise is slim.

All you need is an amplifier and a wire (or cord) that acts like an antenna..I have bootleg recordings of Hendrix where his Marshall stacks pick up walkie talkie Tx's from cops who are trying to "controll" the rowdie crowd.

You have an unshielded low voltage input somewhere in your system, mabey a line-in jumper or just poorly designed sound card. I would disconnect the pc speaker.
