Flogging the dead 'dar horse, again
« on: February 01, 2004, 06:28:24 AM »
There's a lot of well worn grooves on this record, and this idea is not new. Still worth an airing from time to time though.

1. HQ raid. Quote from exasparated vet on country channel: "1 dweeb spoils the fun for hundreds of guys".

2. Puzzled newbie " but all the bases have radar dont they?".

So why not let the radar at the base you are at keep working? There would be an historical accuracy in the effect of knocking out the command and control centre that the other bases radar on the overall map would not show up. However, at "your" base cons coming into its local radar coverage would still be seen.

Yes, quite, absolutely - serves u right for not upping to defend HQ. Point taken, but...

Simply, whatever happened at HQ hundreds of miles away would not affect an airfields local eyes and ears - observer corps, home guard, retired schoolmasters with telescopes, landgirls in the fields, housewives in their gardens digging for victory, schoolboys on bicycles - and all that other historically accurate stuff.

Reason this out some more.

"Your base".  Ok, we can set that by the base you spawned from.  You're saying when HQ is down you only get to see the radar display from the base you took off from.

If someone takes off from a vulched base they get to see the dot radar (unless it's down locally), if someone else decides they don't wanna get vulched they take off from the next base along the coast and don't get to see the radar from the base they will actually be defending.  I quite like that effect.

The constant concern of HQ is getting old. Everyone Squawks about it, but few actually care to defend it properly. There might be historic merit that dicates NO VISUAL DAR whatsoever in this era? If memory serves me.. Navigation was strictly radio signal.
I would love to play in an arena Allies vs Axis without DARl!
In fact, i would like to play in an Allie vs Axis arena without even the cheezy benifit airplane ICON tags. Where one would have to identify the other aircraft befor pulling the trigger
The Fact of the matter is, no one wants to fly Patrol near HQ to intercept HQ raiders. Instead they wait till its too late to actually prevent HQ from taking a hit. But they do however manage to get there early enough to git a Kill or 2   The proper way to defend a countries HQ ,would be to periodicly fly CAP around the HQ Sector boundries. Come to think of it, The absence of a Radar would help curtail the Furballs. I think furballers would still find their place alright..but they would have to hunt for it. This would make them fly a bit more conservitive.  Cherry picking would be something alltogether different as well. :D

Swoop, I too like the effect you describe.

On those maps with close bases I should imagine that furballing could continue to a certain extent as before (ie before command and control map-wide coordinated radar was lost). No secret personal agenda here btw thats not my thing.

True, strategic bombing would still be seriously effected, as of course it should be by taking out all the brass hats at HQ. Bomber groups could at least guage their immediate chances of getting airborne though. And strat is not my thing either.

Mugz, missed your post while typing reply above.

Which was amusing, as was thinking while writing it anyone might wonder what I do enjoy if it is not either strat or the razor edge of the furball.

A secret for you then, such as it is. I most enjoy hanging around HQ, G10 fuelled up and ready to launch against incoming bombers. Defence of the Reich . Ironic? I think so.

Two questions.Do you GO OUT after the Bombers like 30 to 50 miles from HQ?  Or do you wait till you think Bomber is IN SCOPE, like the Score potatos,  then go in for the kill? If the answer is the former and not the latter, welp...your in good company then. I also like to try and babysit HQ in my Non Squad Ops mode. My favorite method is to actually launch my flight with Dts and cruise an intercept patteren. But im  certian that we are exception rather than the rule. Somebody has to do it. :D

Earl1 has been doing that in a P47D-30 with 3 DTs. He climbs to 35k and patrols for an hour an a half at a time. He loves it.

I'd be so bored that I would be doing strange things to the cat, and taunting people I know will respond.

Do a lil search and you will find the Creator says it ain't a bug. It functions the way it was intended.

This is the new AH.  Instead of realizing how easy it is to defend against one attacker, we complain about the "impact" of him being successfull in hopes HTC will change the game to accomodate the lazy.

Not complaining MiniD, trying to make an objective suggestion with some kind of historical basis.

I do believe FWIW that the Creator would reconsider PDQ any aspect of the game that made paying customers, on balance, choose to go elsewhere. Not saying that lack of radar is top of that list, but people do log off when dar goes.
