B-24, B-25 Set To Invade St. Pete-Clearwater Airport

CLEARWATER - The only B-24 bomber still flying will land at St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport about 3 p.m. today with one of the few airworthy B-25s close behind to give vintage aircraft buffs an opportunity to climb aboard - or fly in - one of these World War II relics.
Viewing the planes, restored and preserved by the Stow, Mass.-based Collings Foundation, will cost $7 for adults, $4 for children younger than 12. But rides are a tad pricier: $400 a person for the B-24 ``Liberator''; $350 for the B-25 ``Tondelayo.''
``It costs a lot to restore, maintain and keep these old aircraft flying,'' said R. Fred Wilder of Tampa, volunteer stop coordinator for the foundation. Some replacement parts must be machined by hand.
The bombers will be shown from 3 to 5 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Air- 1 fixed base operation, 14301 60th St. N.
