Gaming Laptops: Suggestions Needed
« on: February 17, 2004, 08:39:35 PM »
Anyone have nominations for a good gaming laptop? It'll be used in a business as well but for "dead time" it has to be able to play the good stuff.

Price point $800 to $1500?

Anybody have experience in this area?

Those are some nice PCs, but they're a little out of his price range arent they?

I bought me a laptop for i think it was $75, it will run AH, but I get 0 FPS, and that is with an 8MB Video card.  You'd get OK frame rates with a 32 MB video card laptop, id say around 15-30FPS.  A laptop like that is probably in your price range.

But dont take my word for it, I dont know much about anything :D

Thanks!

I'm totally unfamiliar with the video card aspect of notebooks. I have no idea what you'd want in there to run something like AH or IL-2.

Will these 64MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) 9600 do the job? Seems like no much memory there.

Anyone actually have one of these? How's it work?

Wadke, I see on the Sager you can get 128MB on the ATI card. Do you have one or know anyone that does? I haven't heard of Sager.

An ODM named Clevo makes the Sager NP5680 and the original Alienware Area 51-M, the Voodoo MClass M550, the Hypersonic Sonic Aviator, and they are all the same computer. Clevo also makes the Sager NP8890 and the Voodoo MClass M600 and they are also the same computer.

Of course the Sager models have a much sweeter price tag!

An ODM named Compal makes some of the DELL, Hewlett Packard and Compaq line of laptops, as well as the PowerPro IV:28 and PowerPro M 5:16.

The Dell Latitude and the Sony Vaio are made by Quanta, who also makes many of the IBM laptops, and the PowerPro C 3:16. Quanta is well known as the best and highest quality laptop ODM in the world.

Yeah, the Sager wins the price crown, no doubt.

I found the company that makes an Alienware copy desktop chipset laptops (no Centrino/mobile chips for me) and I bought one. It runs Call of Duty, AH1, Ah2 (barely, Ah2 doesn't like ATI chipsets for some reason), and I have yet to find something that makes it crawl. Its got enough usb ports internally to run stick, throttle, and pedals and has a 9600 ati vid card.

Same one year warranty as Alienware and they replaced the screen once (no shipping costs either) when ONE of the pixels died.

Well worth the money and 2/3 the price of Alienware.

I have to correct myself... they did not make the housing for Alienware but except for the housing they were identical to what Alienware was selling.

The mobility radeon 9600's will do the job. Not sure about AH2 but it has gotten some good reviews from gaming sites. They run all kinds of games at very nice FPS.

ATI has just released mobility radeon 9700 and its supposed to be awesome if you have the time to wait a few weeks for it to ship in a notebook.

I picked up a 128mb ATI9600 graphics based laptop just after Christmas. I went a bit mad and the price was... a lot. 17" screen, gig of RAM, DVD burner, wireless networking. My poor wallet.

Runs AHII and IL2 FB just peachy at 1440x900 with AA turned on.

Its a Clevo D47U based model and I'd recomend similar to anyone as long as they have large arm muscles, it weighs quite a lot.

Delerium, Gatso...... particular brand/model suggestions?

This one is for my son; he's a Commercial Real Estate guy and it will have to do work and play. He does about all the company computer stuff, making presentations, maps, graphics, etc.

He wants to stay ~$1500.

If you want a gaming laptop like mine, you won't want to use it going from place to place selling real estate. It uses far too much power for true wireless capability. I only bought mine because I'm never far from a power plug...
