please help me identify this movie...

black and white, I watched only what appeared to be the final scene.
camera is in the bomb-bay:
A B47 is dropping a bomb and on the bomb a fat guy is riding, waving a cowboy hat.
The sheer stupidity of that image has forever burned it into my mamemory in vivid black and white.
so, what movie is this, and what is it about.

Dr. Strangelove.   It's about the end of the world.   I think it was a B-52, not a B-47.  Rent it, you'll like it.

I believe you're describing the "infamous" Slim Pickens riding a nuke scene from Dr. Strangelove: Or How I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb by Stanley Kubrick.  Probably my favorite movie of all time :D

P.S.  It was a B-52 not a B-47

The circumstances for why he's riding the bomb become clear when you watch the movie.  There's actually a logical reason for it.

Excellent film.

The funniest thing about the bomb scene is that Slim Pickens was never told the movie was a comedy and was told to act seriously.

That sounds like a Hollywood myth.

I've heard the same thing: the film was supposed to be a serious drama, but when the producers realized how funny some of the war room scenes were, they decided to re-shoot some parts and make it a comedy.

the survival kit checklist is worth the price of the movie

Survival kit contents check.
In them you'll find:
one 45 caliber automatic,
two boxes of ammunition,
four days concentrated emergency rations,
one drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills,
pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills,
one miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible,
one hundred dollars in rubles,
one hundred in gold,
nine packs of chewing gum,
one issue of prophylactics,
three lipsticks,
three pairs of nylon stockings.

Shoot! A fella could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.

Oh, C'mon guys... you don't cast Peter Sellers in 3 separate roles for a "serious drama". It was meant to be a satire from day 1. Calling it an accidental comedy is a disservice to one of the world's greatest directors.

OK I looked it up.  The original script was called "Red Alert", and it was a drama.  Kubrick hired a writer to make a black comedy version for his movie.  So it was intended from the start to be a black comedy.  Sellers was also going to play the crazy Texan pilot, but he sprained his ankle and couldn't do some of the scenes.  One replacement they tried to get was John Wayne, and the guy who played Hoss on Bonanza.  They ended up with Slim Pickens.

George C. Scott gives one of his best performances in Dr. Strangelove. Come to think of it, most of the actors gave their best performances in that movie. Kubrick worked some magic.
