Question re: AH wind and it's effect...
« on: May 30, 2001, 11:22:00 AM »

I've been disussing the AH wind feature and it's effect in the arena with a guy and, well the discussion has had several points I cannot explain or dismiss so I offered to post any questions here hoping some RL pilots would answer. Hopefully HiTech or Pyro too!

In a nutshell the issue raised asks if the AH wind feature, and it's effect on an AH airplane in the MA, is realistic.

 I do not know.

"What are the various wind speeds at various levels? We've been having a discussion that estimates the speed of a wind that pushes a plane off course by 30 degress in 5-7 secs to be approximately 100mph...I was asking out of curiousity more than nything. it can be dealt with, but it'd be nice if it had varying alts/speeds every now and then, because it simply makes fighting between 12-20k more of a hassle than it *need* be *all* the time. It's an annoyance that could be made more subtle and unpredictable.    )"

Gotta say MS FS 5.0 (yes the DOS version!) had a really killer wind effects. Turbulence was random and would rock, jolt, and bounce the plane all over heck and gone. The wind was far from the constant God's Fart we've got now. Using the external view, with the wind turned up a smidge, showed you just how bad it was moving the aircraft around. Crank the turbulence up and suddenly the plane bounces all over the place!! Damn that was a fun sim, too bad my vid card hated it

The wind in AH serves no purpose as far as I can see. It doesn't cause the plane to react as it would for real. There is no effect on bombs or shells and no way to determine the direction at the field. Al I can see it do is change the heading briefly on autoclimb. Sometimes landing a field at just the right altitude (and you don't know what that is ahead of time) it will push off the runway. Not much of a feature IMO.

Yes, I've never noticed a heading change in real life like in AH when transitioning through wind layers. You will never see it visually looking out the nose like you do in AH. In fact you would probably only notice it if you were following a course and noticed you were drifting off course and you would have to change your heading to get back on course. Keep in mind your heading indicator would still be indicating the same heading until you made the course correction even though you are moving with the wind in a new direction. It seems as though the wind in AH is moving the A/C instead of the A/C moving with/within the wind layers.

Another thing I noticed before but haven't given much thought about lately was taking off in a crosswind your ball on your turn co-ordinator was/maybe still is always deflected fully in the opposite direction of the crosswind! That's totally bellybutton backwards, in fact your ball should barely be deflected of center into the direction the wind is coming from. Remember you have to 'step on the ball'.  It would probably take a hell of a crosswind for you to see the ball move much while you were on the ground still. I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong about this

Cit I do too. That's why in every wind thread I mention MS FS 5 and the wind effects in it. Those were the best simulations of wind I have ever seen, and loads of fun to fly through. Granted the effect was based on a pattern, but it had enough randomness so you couldn't pick that pattern out. Same with the turbulence. In Longbow Gold and Longbow 2 all these effects did was rock the helo from one side to another. Boring as all hell. I have to say I wish HTC could just copy-paste MS FS 5's wind and turbulence into AH. But they can't, so how about some real wind, rocking, bouncing, and random stuff Pyro? Could it even be done?
