Unemployment benefits not extended: Thank Kerry

On a 59-40 vote in the GOP-controlled Senate, they fell just shy of the 60 votes needed to overcome objections that extending the benefits violated last year's budget agreement.

Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, was the only senator who missed the vote. Kerry was campaigning Tuesday in Kentucky.

What was the voting among party lines?

or you could blame those other 40 who voted directly against it.  but I suppose if you looking for anything you can find to blame on him you'll find it.  even when there are 40 others readily at hand who where much more responsable than he was (they did vote against it as apossed to not voting at all).  I'll go out on a limb here and guess that the reason we aren't blaming those 40 right now is because they are republicans, right?

bingo Capt apathy ;)

And why on earth would the government extend benefits in this time of a supposedly booming economy and where hundreds of thousands of new jobs are reportedly being created each month?
If the government cut benefits across the board we'd all probably save at least a few bucks per month from the lower taxes.
Add that bonus to the future boon of 15 cents less per gallon of gasoline and I dare say my vote could swing towards reelecting Bush/Cheney and Rumsfield!

(well, toss in a lobotomy too and I might vote for him)

Democrats tried to attach the benefit to a corporate tax bill.

Yep, we could probably blame the others too ;)

Why doesn't Kerry just give up his Senate seat? Bob Dole did...

He could fake resign, maybe turn in teddy's papers whiler claiming they are his own?

maybe Bush could resign too, so he wouldn't have to take time off from his job to campaign either.  ( not that he ever really needed much of a reason to take some more time off)

Bush's job is remembering his lines while Cheney and Rummy are calling the shots. As lons as he keeps answering every question with "stay the course" he'll be just fine.

PS  June 30 is only about Nov. 2.

Wait, why do we want unemployment benefits again?

The government shouldn't be in the insurance business anyway.

Maybe the people on unemployment should just get a job.  This way the whole thing would become moot.
