I have been seeing micro-freezes when running the Beta 30 (and earlier) of AH2 offline.  My system is fairly capable:

Dell Dimension 8300
Pentium 4 3GHz
256MB DDR ATI Radeon 9800 XT
512 MB RAM
Windows XP
DirectX 9.0b

When I CAN get on ( see another thread ) it runs as smooth as glass. The preload of planes that was added a release or two ago took care of freezes I was having.

I have graphic details set to max except for ground detail that's backed off to about 2 miles. Running an average of 84fps out flying regardless of traffic, clutter, etc.

Epox INTEL865 EP-4PDA2+
800 FBS Hypertheading
INTEL P4/3.0GHz CPU
2 x 512MB PC 3200 Ram
Western Digital SATA 80gig hard drive
7200RPM 8MB buffer
Chaintech FX5900XT Nvidia card
DirectX 9.0B
Soundblaster 512
Misc DVD-RW, DVD, floppy
Antec Truepower 430watt power supply
XP Home

CH USB Fighter stick, Pro throttle, Pro pedals
AH2 Full slider graphics, all but ground detail (2 miles)
1024x768

The preload of planes only covers the basic plane textures.  That was done up front to alleviate a lot of the stutters that will happen when the texture cache is generated.  There are still other textures from the terrain and custom skins that can generate a stutter the first time you encounter them.  After that, you shouldn't have a problem.

Would the stutters seen here be consistent with coming across a new custom skin on another plane for the first time?

Pyro,

The stutters you refer to I have experienced and they lessen in frequency the more I play.

The problem that I get are some stutters when I type.  I don't remember noticing them in prior betas.

If needed, I can post my dxdiag.

I also see framerate hiccoughs with typing.  I remember noticing back when I started doing H2H that typing really messes with the network status lines, host queue, etc, so maybe there's something goofy going on when typing in the text buffer.

Could be - yesterday was my first time online with a large group - some of whom had obviously downloaded the skins.

Today the micro freezes were far less frequent though I had fiddled with the settings somewhat.

Will we experience the freezes you describe each time we log on or only the first time we come in range of a new skin?

Same problem, albeit rather minor. Running ATI 9600XT with plenty of RAM.

Freeze ups last only a fraction of a second, does effect gunnery tho. Getting 60+ fps otherwise.

I've found a workaround for microfreezes, but you need at least 768M of ram to do it.
Download Ramdisk XP and install it, create a 400M ramdrive and install AH2 in the ramdrive, textures will cache so fast you wont get a freezeup.

I would say that the stutters for me are consistent when encountering a new plane, yes.  Today I experience quite a severe pause when I came across a formation of B17's.  THe longer you play the less they seem to appear so I would guess it comes from the initial meeting of a "new" plane type.

I had them all the time today. For about 3 hours. If alone or in furball...no difference.

Same problem here.  Usually when I flew near another plane.

Someone said that the micro freezes don't affect gunnery--well, they did for me.  By the time it unfroze, the plane was out of my sights.  If that's what we have to put up with, screw custom skins.

I also experienced the typing lag--especially if I held backspace to get rid of a string of text.
