Need Help
« on: May 24, 2004, 01:21:13 PM »
I think I have some spyware or a virus on my puter.  Every time I open internet explorer my home page defaults to some generic search page, like the kind you get when you misspell a website...  I change the site back to my home page and next time I open ie, it goes back to the generic page.  Ran a virus scan and came up clean so I think it is spyware.  Is there a way to check this out?

Puter seems to be running a little slow, could just be my imagination.

Thanks,

Bob

Search in the root of your c:\ drive for a file called "search.htm".  Delete it.  Then download and run Ad-Aware and Spybot.

I had the same problem last week.  No more porn sites for me.  I swear this time.  :D

Also open Regedit (Start->Run->"regedit") and search for the adress that you see in your browser when you start. Delete it wherever you find it. In "default prefix" - leave only "http://", delete anything else you see there.

Yeah Netscape only logs your IP and user ID with every download you make to send it home.

You might want to read about spyware on http://www.grc.com

not to start a fuss, my buddy had the same problem and he found out that he has a trojan virus (or worm). everytime that he hit the internet explorer it does the same thing as you. when he ran a virus scan (updated version) it would quarenteen it and then we would delete it. if he went back to the internet explorer the same thing would happen all over again. he thinks that he got it from an email. it wasnt attached in the email, it was attached to the email. now this what he told me. he is a computer wizz (big time) and i am not. if you need any help tell me and ill ask him for you.

maybe it is something that is stored in IE cache??

goto the IE tmp/cache directory and delete everything (there could be 20 meg or more of stuff in there)

navigate to the page you want to be your 'homepage' and manually set it to be the default page.

I have been using Opera as my browser for a long time and am very pleased with it! http://www.opera.com/

Try the free version !! It's very fast to load stuff!

Ask the hubby Roscoroo when he gets home at 8PST ... same thing happened to him ... our virus protection found it after he updated and scanned ... it was a trojan can't remember the name ... he had a hell of a time getting rid of the blasted thing. He thinks it was embedded in an email
