Internet Explorer Nightmare! please help?
« on: June 06, 2004, 01:12:31 AM »
OK, see the bar running down the left side of the page?  It's the Explorer bar "Search"

I "X" it out but it reappears every time I open an internet explorer window.  I've tried everything, even reloaded IE.

Please help!

right mouse button will let me close the bar.  but when I re-open IE it is there all over again.

Customize toolbars merely lets me add or remove buttons from the regular toolbar.

lass.exe
180solutions  <--- this is the one thats installs a search thing
msbb.exe
lycos
save
fleok
wupdt.exe
dw.exe

due a file search for any of these and if you find them theres a good chance you have a bug

its troj_onenet.a   or a version of the sassor worm .. theres another one also that causes this its a stupid browser bug thats been going around .

you'll have to do a regestry edit to killl it compleatly and remember to clean out cookies temp files ect too ...

trendmicro.com   has all the instructions once you identify it .

I found a dw. exe but it had some other letters in it, trned micro scan said it was infected w/ a trojan so I deleted it.

other odd things going on: I cannot reload(install) windows.  I could not reload IE, finally managed in safe mode but it fixed nothing.
I could not load my new vid card drivers because I did could not write files to the system32 folder. I had to manually go in and change priveldeges on the file.

I know a bit about hardware, some about software but squat about viruses.  am I infected?

If yes, please recommend a virus killer.  Ty everyone for input!

If you think you have a virus and your new 9800Pro isnt performing as it should be....go ahead and reformat.....thats what I would do.

Steve! You seem to be all at sea with this PC lark.

Virus killer recommendation: Trend Micro Internet Security A UK product, but don't allow yourself to be swayed by the typical American "not invented here" syndrome. ;) TMIS also has a firewall. You should have antivirus AND firewall. Aces High is fine with TMIS running in the background, although you might want to disable autoupdate. You don't want your antivirus software cranking up just as you're diving your P51 down from your 30K perch. Waah! It's going to be a "wring beet1e's neck" day! :lol

What i normally do is after  figuring out what virus it is ....

i use the viropedia at trendmicro for this .. then i got to the specific virus and print out its removal/ regestry edit instructions then have at it ....

pull the pc offline also .

Always besure the temp files, cookies , ect get deleated 1st

After you get all the bugs files deleated .. and the regestry cleaned out ..   do a restart into "Safe Mode" and then double check the regestry and do a file search again  to try to find any remains ... if its all clean ........ Game on !!!   tee hee

ps Beetle is correct  Trend micro just Rocks
I use fixit utilitys on my pc  which has the trendmicro virus pattern files  (set at manual update )   Pc-cillin also has a nice firewall AV program that uses the same pattern files  it only has 2-4 processes added to your start up programs also .

well, as I typed in a previous post,  I used Trend micro to sniff out the bad files. Seems like good stuff.  I'm gonna see if Pc cillin is downloadable.

How can I tell if my registry is clean?

go back into the regestry and look for the stuff you removed if it doesnt show back up then you were successfull

start/ run /msconfig    and check the startup progams also helps

pccillin has a 30 day trial for there av firewall program

if you use it set the firewall to allow in- outbound traffic for tcp for ports 2000-5000   and it will play AH just great ...

I use Trend's Internet Security and leave the firewall up while playing AH with no need to make any special settings. I do struggle to get LAN games of any description to play across it though.

Ran PC Cillin... 4 troljans, no real viruses.  My problems began when I ran hijackthis.   I think I deleted some stuff I should not have.  Just went back and deleted more BHO's, now I can get the search bar out and not have it come back but some of the web pages only utilize the left 2/3rd's of the screen.  Trying now to reload IE but I cannot find where to delete it!
