Signature Blocks
« on: March 08, 2000, 08:03:00 AM »
Does anyone know of a way to "turn off" the signature blocks on the BBS? I haven't been able to find it if there is one. Please let me know if there is one.

We seem to go through this in waves; the blocks are getting huge again. While my modem is fast enough, these things are merely clutter, ESPECIALLY after you've seen them the first time.

If you really feel you must continually stroke your ego, please keep the strokes as small as possible.

Thank you very much.

I agree. There is some really nice work out there, but a much smaller jpg (150 pixels wide, max) would be much more considerate for those that pay by the minute on the phone lines.

Personally, I have ISDN, but I know there are others that are on dial-up.

Amen Toad. Not only  is the size a problem on quite alot of these but many have a slow link to those pictures which are a major hassle. JG2's in particular are slow.
Even at home on cable modem service I've been clicking on topics to read and the sig file pics are so slow to load that I now click [stop] or hit [esc] on the browser about 10-20 seconds into a topic download to kill them.

I think toads right,  mines a good size but anything larger will slow the board down for people on slower conn. i have no problem sicne i'm on a T-1 during the day and 128 ISDN at night.  it can get out of hand.  Theres a msg board i go to for a First Person Shooter and there's people there that have 640x480 signature images.      geesh..

Hey, guys, I'm NOT trying to be the Signature Police or anything!

You gotta do what you gotta do....

All I ask is that we all be a bit considerate in what we place in those blocks.

Ask yourself just what it adds to your post and how big it needs to be to accomplish that. Consider that if you make a lot of posts, anything will get stale after a while.

Thanks!

Torque it's no biggy. I didn't want to come off as beligerent and that was not my intent.  It just these folks with the 3"X5" signiature pics and some websites that just don't download these files quickly that makes it a pain.  It is an all around problem not anyone in particular. I only mentioned JG2 because maybe they have one source for these to be linked to that might be slow or even powered off at times.
Not to pick on anyone in particular but to
show two examples; Razer in this topic is just about perfect. It's small and loads real fast.  RAM's on the other hand is very large and loads very slowly.

I hope I wasn't causing trouble, I just wanted to give folks a picture of me in case they were curious.

Yeah an option to disable the dumb image files, _including_ the even more dumb smileys. A NNTP access would be nice too.

Mines nice and big.
Lets all make ours hi-res 32bit coulour bmp format - say 400*600 or so. Lets try keep em under a meg eh - be considerate

There is a setting in your browser to turn pics off - i know its not quite what ya wanted but im not sure if theres any other way.

BTW, i might make mine more appropriate

- DONT KNOCK THE SMILIES!!!!

I think a graphic image every few messages or so breaks up the monotony of the text.  If it displeases you simply press the "STOP" button at the top of your browser.  You don't have to wait for pictures to load.
I really enjoy looking at people's artwork.  It's sort of like painting the nose of your plane.  Is it ego stroking?  I don't see it that way.
