uisce beatha

So THAT'S what it means! It's in Merlin's chant in the film 'Excalibur' - trust Boorman to make it a whiskey refrence!

I've tried Knob creek, and bloody good it was too. In fact, the person who gave it to me said it was the 'best' sour mash' ever.  Had forgotten until it was posted. But  I want to try sik's suggestion. I'll get a friendly american personage I know to send it to me ;0

Definitely no ice with a decent single malt scotch. It is said that ice numbs the tongue and therefore diminishes your ability to taste. A little spring water is ok and may help you to appreciate the more subtle flavors.
Here we put salt on Margaritas, not sidewalks.

Close.  No ice in whisky, as it destroys the aromatics.

Adding a wee bit of good spring water will release more of the subtle flavours.  Some whiskys don't take well to reducing (water), ie those from sherried casks.

So..is it more an issue of temperature or the ice cube itself, as in a sudden change in temperature? Impurities in the tap water? I'm kinda missing the point here, but I'm not sure how. :)

Mandrake. Mandrake, have you never wondered why I drink only distilled water, or rain water, and only pure grain alcohol?

There is a higher end Irish whiskey called Middleton's that is made by John Jamesons.   Very good !!!

Aberlour is one of my favorites. I haven't tried the 10 year but the 15 year never lasts long around here.

Tried Threshers in Henley-on-Thames. They've never heard of it, but they're plebs. Went round the corner to Unwins - they can order it but it's £29.99 a bottle! The guy was very nice to offer to order it, but I told him I wasn't £29.99 keen.

Guys, life is short. sampling of life small pleasures is a must. can't afford it? get a piggybank and start saving the pennies. spouse won't allow you to spend that much? sneak it in as a form of a present, add it to a bigger present or something. there is always a way. think you might not like it? well ,you won't know til you try it. call bars or pubs see if they serve it by the shots or glass. if it is a wine, hehehe most wine stores and wineries have wine tasting days(usually free, kind of like a promo to sell more), call to see when they have one. maybe even plan a little day trip for it , it'll be like a mini-vacation. those that are not old enough, sorry, but you will just have to wait like the rest of us did.

now you have a mission, just do it  ;)
