Fishu Busted?
« on: January 02, 2001, 06:25:00 PM »
I just did a search of posts that Fishu has responded to over the past 10 days.
There were 13 of them, most had several responses.  Many were rather lengthy.

I was scanning for the words "a" and "an".  I was particularly looking for a trend of misuse.
What I found amazed me; "a" was used only two times (correctly), "an" was not used at all.
"A" and "an" are two of the most frequently used words in the English Language (I think "a" is #2, and "an" is in the top 10).  It is interesting to me that someone could write so much, and completely avoid these two words.

This is not meant to be a criticism of anyone's language abilities, the BB is very casual.
But, if you look at the post by Buzzbait, you may see what I am getting at.

Almost every "english second language" speaker makes this mistake. Including myself.

Much more telling is the reverse or slanted apostrophes in Buzz's post.

ie:

"...although I don`t doubt I`d be pretty..."

normally they look like this:

"...although I don't doubt I'd be pretty..."

Fishu's are normal...it aint him. But if u find another post with slanted apostrophes, yer probably looking at yer man.

Personally? I think it's a huge waste of time

Definitely a waste of time!

I wonder if he will comment, however.
He had nothing to say about Buzz's post.

...and who else?
Sorry, but I do post everything as Fishu
What comes to 'a' / 'an' case, well.. I guess thats quite normal for foreigners.
It IS confusing.
Should be used with objects/things methinks.
and 'an' with those..  what that word was .. an airplane..  thats example.. not a airplane, but an airplane, right?

..besides, I am too lazy anyway to watch everything like that, I already speak Finnish which is ten times harder than english

What Buzz's post?

I notice in eskimo's leading post that "a" was used only once without quotes and "an" was not used at all.

Fishu,

"An" is used before words beginning with a vowel, such as "an airplane". "A" is used for words beginning with a consonant:
"a bi-plane".

This rule also includes words that sound like they start with a vowel. "An F4U Corsair". "F" sounds like "ef".

Hope this helps.

(These rules are non-existant in American Sign Language   )

` is the lower case of ~

Wrong pinky typing.  I'd say you're looking for a left-handed person.

Or possibly a one-armed man...
