I seem to recall a British task force engaged a French naval force in a port in North Africa after the French capitulation to Hitler.  The British first tried to diplomatically receive the French surrender, but the French admiral was an idiot and he ended up losing men and vessels needlessly.

And there was the German pocket battleship matter in South America.  They made a movie out of that one.

German U-boat sunk in the Gulf of Mexico I believe, along with dozens of liberty ships.

LOL Eagler!

There was only one "major" naval battle in the Atlantic in WW2....and it was called "The Battle of the Atlantic", fought between German U-boats and British, Canadian and American escorts.

I think it's generally agreed that it lasted from Sept.1 1939 until early 1944.  By 1944, the Allies pretty much had won, although there were still u-boats active all the way up until the end of hostilities.

Time to answer the question, but first i must say sorry about missspelling naval my fingers never do what my head says to. also the way I worded the question banana was totally right sorry banana and u others i should have said surface battle. Slo I am a little dense I dont know where u coming from are u saying the BRITISH  were going to kill all the familys?     The largest surface battle in the atlantic during ww2 was between the american navy and french navy. The american navy sunk all french ships and suffered 2 damaged ships some wounded but none killed. The french navy opened fire first......2 weeks ago the history channel devoted 2 segments to this subject since then I have read a couple of accounts of said battle and have learned a few more things i didnt know.  Thanks for answering and banana u are totally right my bad, again all thanks.

no wonder the french hate the USA , first we sink their navy then we invade normandy, drive out the french allies the germans who were defending france from the american-anglo invaders, then the imperial anglo/americans install their puppet dictator degaule.

Where did you come up with this Slo, I've never heard it. And considering that Darlan was considered to have been politically motivated by some historians (here I can only name 2, Irwin Wall, and Warren Tute).  To call the notion that he had a choice "ignorant" and "stupid" seems a bit rash to me.

As far as I can tell Mers El Kabir was a sad and unfortunate necessity. The French had included the disposition of the fleet in their armisist with Germany, and De Gaulle was offfering his utmost assurances that the fleet would not end up in German hands. In the end, the "only way to be sure"  was for the British to go in and take the fleet, or sink it.

I've never heard about German death threats to the families. That would certainly have changed my analysis somewhat, although I would think the Darlan and Gensou still had a chance to scuttle the ships and avoid the battle.

Because they didn't know the British were going to hit them. Gensou believed that he had time to negotiate with Sommerville, and did not believe that the British would actually use force.

And yes, I would like a source. Not to win any internet pissing contest, but because I really would like to know about this well known fact, that I missed during my (admittedly undergraduate) research on the subject.

Here's what I have on the topic:

http://www.warszawa.hailcesarz.com/WWII.htm

I think it ties up the loose ends rather nicely.
