"Norway's Fjords Earn Top Score
National Geographic Traveler magazine has rated Norway’s spectacular fjords as the top travel destination in the world in the magazine’s first “Index of Destination Stewardship”—an elite list of the least spoiled, great places on earth.
For the cover story in its March 2004 issue, National Geographic Traveler surveyed more than 200 tourism experts to evaluate 115 of the world’s best-known destinations according to criteria that pertain to cultural, environmental and aesthetic integrity. Norway’s fjords earned the top ranking based on what the magazine called a combination of geographic good luck—the fjords’ rugged terrain, attractive climate, difficult access and short tourist season—and Norway’s excellent environmental track record.
The fjord region on the west coast of Norway offer some of the most dramatic and beautiful sceneries in the world. Visitors are treated to a variety of wilderness experiences, including mountains, glaciers, national parks, crystal-clear waterfalls, fertile green valleys and hillsides, and expansive fruit orchards. The centuries-old fjord villages are rich with traditional stave churches, historical sites and charming hotels."
