Thanks for that bit Coolridr. In my youth I was fascinated more with the War of 1812 (used to go visit the USS Consitituion every summer at least once) than the Revolutionary War. But in the past few years I've been reading a lot on the Rev War and the early days of our country. The diaries of Hessians who fought here, the "Convention Soldiers (Burgoyne's and von Riedesel army that surrendered) and what happened to them etc.

But I've not spent any time reading about the fledgling navy (didn;t realise there was one) and you've got my curiosity sparked

1787: Sept 17, The Constitutional Convention, called to organize a stronger federal government for the United States, approves the Constitution, which is then submitted to the individual states for ratification. Among the powers specifically vested in the new government is "to provide and maintain a Navy" The process of ratification is completed in the summer of 1788, but years will pass before a navy is actually established.

By the way, The US Navy is the only military service that is garanteed by the constitution to exist.

what I'm wonderin about is who's worst, a pathetic attention seeker or a pathetic liar.
